The 10th Annual Hampton Acoustic Blues Revival will take place on Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Hampton campus at the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium in Templin Hall on Saturday, April 9 from 4-9:30 p.m. The free event is open to the public and includes performances by M.S.G.-The Acoustic Blues Trio which features TNCC Adjunct Instructor Jackie Merritt, a guitarist, bassist and harmonica player. Others on the program are Bruce Kincaid, Fetner & Dikon, Fat Tony and Del Rey.
The festival begins with Bruce Kincaid conducting a “Diddley Bow Workshop” from 4-4:45 p.m. The diddley bow is a homemade instrument consisting of a wooden board and a single wire string stretched between two screws. It’s played by plucking while varying the pitch with a metal or glass slide held in the other hand. The instrument is significant to blues music because many blues guitarists got their start playing it as children. Kincaid is an accomplished vocalist, percussionist and harmonica player who has performed with classic rock and blues band Relic and the Virginia Choral Society. He currently plays with Shelly Craig-Potter and Dale Butcher as part of the band, Blues Committee.
From 5 to 5:45 p.m., fans of traditional folk and blues, early Memphis soul, and down-home Chicago can enjoy the duo Fetner & Dikon. On guitar and vocals is Ron Fetner, a nationally acclaimed singer, songwriter and guitarist with four independently released CDs.
He began as a road guitarist for the Dixie Cups and performed with Sonny & The Shadows and DC’s Cherry Smash. Harmonica player, vocalist and songwriter Tom Dikon began his music career in New England with the group Union Street. He has recorded with Green Mountain Records and toured throughout the East Coast and Europe.
Fat Tony, a band of Hampton Roads residents, brings its blues, swing and eclectic sounds to the audience from 6-6:45 p.m. The band was established in 1998 and includes Paul Mulcahy (tenor guitarist), Sandy Martin (harmonica player for local blues band Blues Exchange), Sam Hochberg (acoustic guitarist), Chuck Moebus (saxophonist and electric guitarist) and Chris Jones (washtub bassist). In 2007, Portfolio Magazine named Fat Tony Tidewater Virginia’s Best Blues Band, an honor the group also received in 2005 from Ninevolt Magazine.
Guitarist Del Rey closes out the festival with an 8:15-9:15 p.m. performance. Her show combines country blues, stride piano, classic jazz and hillbilly boogie. She plays concerts worldwide and also presents a concert/lecture on female musicians called “Women in American Music.” She has recorded five solo albums, Blue Uke (Hobemian 2008), When The Levee Breaks (Hobemian 2006), X-Rey Guitar (Hobemian 2000), Hot Sauce (Hobemian 1995) and Boogie Mysterioso (Hobemian 1993). In 2003 she released the collection of performances Del Rey: Live. Her most recent CD is Hen Party with Suzy Thompson (Hobemian 2010).
