Step 1: Complete the online application for admission and domicile
A Student identification number (emplid) is assigned. The identification number allows you access to the Student Information System and to all college rights and privileges.
Determine your Eligibility for Admission:
Instructions for new, readmit, transfer, high school dual enrollment home school, senior citizen or suspended/dismissed students.
- To start your application use the ‘New Users’ button. If you did not complete and submit the application, use the ‘Returning Users’ button to continue.
- Review all the available options to assist you in paying for college. Options may include yourself, family members, investments, college savings accounts, work (3rd party accounts) and/or financial aid and scholarships.
- If you are applying for federal financial aid, please use your correct social security number when you apply.
Review the Estimated Cost of Attendance (COA):
Your estimated COA is a standardized estimate of what it will cost you to attend TNCC for the academic year. Tuition and Fees information @ TNCC
Letter of Acknowledgement:
Your Letter of Acknowledgement will be sent to your VCCS email account that is issued once you complete your application. Please review your letter on MyTNCC for your tuition domicile status. Your tuition rate (in-state/out-of-state) is calculated based on your domicile status. For questions or concerns or to change your tuition rate from out-of-state to in-state, contact the Enrollment Services Office at (757) 825-2800 Hampton Campus or (757) 253-4288 Historic Triangle.
Meet with a counselor/advisor:
Students are seen individually during walk-in hours. It is very important to see an advisor before registering.
- You can view the different Programs of Study available to you at TNCC.

Step 2: Contact the Enrollment Services Office for assessment
You may submit SAT or ACT, test scores, high school transcript, college transcript or GED to be reviewed. Assessment of skill level is mandatory for all new students. Test results are used to determine which classes you are eligible to take.
Placement Tests:
Students must obtain an Applicant Information Form from the Welcome Center, 221-I Griffin Hall (Hampton Campus) or Suite 117 (Historic Triangle Campus). The form will indicate the placement test(s) that the student is required to take based on a pre-screening process implemented by Enrollment Services personnel. Students are strongly encouraged to take required placement tests as soon as possible.
SAT reading and math scores of 500 or higher and ACT scores of 21 or higher may exempt a student from all or a portion of the placement test when the score report is submitted to the Welcome Center.

Send your transcripts:
Have your official transcript(s), ACT/SAT scores and/or GED scores sent to the Welcome Center. Official request for evaluation of prior credits must be made by submitting the Request for Transfer Evaluation (Form 218) to the Welcome Center.

Step 3: Apply for Financial Aid online
Visit FAFSA Online or call the Financial Aid office at (757) 825-2848. You can also receive scholarship information at this office which is located on the Hampton Campus, Griffin Hall room 212.
Eligibility for Financial Aid:
Financial Aid is usually awarded based on financial need but can be awarded based on merit or a combination of factors. You must be in a degree seeking program to be eligible for federal financial aid.
Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA):
- If you used a 999999999 Social Security Number for admission, you must change it to your correct SSN to receive financial aid.

TNCC Financial Aid Office:
- Financial Aid funds will be posted on MyTNCC or you may contact the Financial Aid Office at (757) 825-2848 or email financialaid@tncc.edu.
- Follow these steps to determine your eligibility, complete the worksheets and apply for a PIN.
- Obtain a Personal identification number (PIN). Prior to applying for federal financial aid, you should obtain a PIN online at www.pin.ed.gov. This number serves as your electronic signature and may be used to file your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), make corrections to your Student Aid Report (SAR), and monitor federal loans that you receive. If you are a dependent student, a parent should also request a PIN, which can be used as their electronic signature on the FAFSA.
- Complete the 2010-2011 FAFSA. The Department of Education recommends that you file the FAFSA online, but a paper version of the application is acceptable. Indicate TNCC as your school of choice on the FAFSA. TNCC’s Title IV school code is 006871.
- Apply by TNCC’s priority filing dates:
- May 1 for Fall Semester
- November 1 for Spring Semester
- April 1 for Summer Semester
- If you provided an email address on your FAFSA, you should receive information on how to access your SAR via email within 5 to 7 days after filing your FAFSA. If you did not provide an email address, your SAR will be mailed to you within 2 to 3 weeks after filing your FAFSA. If you do not receive your SAR, contact the Federal Processor at (800) 433-3243.
- Make corrections to your SAR if the information is incorrect or additional information is requested. You may make corrections online at FAFSA, using your PIN as your electronic signature. For questions about the correction process, please call the Federal Processor at (800) 433-3243.
- When your eligibility for financial aid has been determined and your awards are available for you to review, an email notification will be sent to your VCCS email address. You may also check your status online in SIS (PeopleSoft). Accept or decline financial aid within 30 days of receipt of the award notification or financial aid will be cancelled. Step 4: Access your email, verify your address and telephone number
- Login to MyTNCC now.
- As a TNCC student, you are required to utilize your VCCS email account. This account was assigned during your application to the college in order to receive official communications and important announcements including your Letter of Acknowledgement and, financial aid award notifications. It is your responsibility to check your email account for these notifications.
- Access your email by logging into MyTNCC and selecting "Student Email (Gmail)" under "My Tools".
Step 5: Attend a Gatortation New Student Orientation session
Step 6: Register for classes online
After you have completed the above steps, you are ready to register for classes. Refer to the Academic Calendar to see when you can register online and in-person.
Refer to the Schedule of Classes for course offerings each semester at the Hampton Campus, Historic Triangle Campus and the Southeast Higher Education Center.
Instructions to register:
- Instructions on how to access SIS (PeopleSoft) is located on TNCC.edu under Get Help @ TNCC. Additionally you will find instructions for using the Student Center and other resources.
- If you have a hold on your record, you will need to have it removed before you can register for classes online. Instructions are included on how to view account Holds, search for classes view class schedule, view tuition charges, add, swap and drop classes. Get Help @ TNCC
Step 7: Pay Tuition and Fees
Options for paying tuition and fees:
- You have several options for paying your tuition including the FACTS budget plan (tuition payment plan).
- For information on tuition and fees for each semester review information available on TNCC.edu or contact the Business Office at (757) 825-2721.
- For paying in person, please visit the Business Office, Hampton Campus, Diggs Hall, Room 109 or call (757) 825-2721.

Student Permits
The cost of the initial permit for each school year is included in the tuition and fees. A permit must be obtained within ten (10) days of the start of classes. Additional permits (including replacements for lost or stolen permits) can be purchased at the Cashiers Window for a $10 fee each.
Step 8: Purchase textbooks and click on Textbook & Course Materials
You will need your course information: subject, catalog number and section
(i.e. ACC 211 01H)
- Financial Aid students can complete the book order form. Any remaining funds after tuition is paid can be used to purchase textbooks. If you decide to go in person to the bookstore, check for scheduled dates.

Step 9: Obtain Photo ID and Parking Permit
- You must be enrolled in at least one class to purchase a decal or get your Student Photo ID.
- All vehicles parked on campus and at all locations where TNCC classes are being held must display a current TNCC parking permit. Failure to register your vehicle and display a current parking permit may result in the receipt of a parking citation, towing, or wheel lock. Students are required to have TNCC Photo IDs which are available in the Photo ID Office, Hampton Campus, Diggs Hall, Room 155. To obtain a photo ID, you must present some form of picture identification and an assigned EMPLID/student number.
- To obtain a parking permit, you must present a current vehicle state registration card, some form of picture identification, and an EMPLID number. Permits may be purchased in the Business Office, Diggs Hall, Room 109.

Step 10: Attend Class and Utilize Technical Assistance

e2Campus is a mass notification network that empowers TNCC to send instant alerts to faculty, staff, and students. This emergency notification system is used to increase campus safety. Please check with your cell phone carrier for applicable rates before you register.

NOTE: Thomas Nelson Community College has an appeal process for students who may have been academically suspended or dismissed from TNCC or a previous college or university. These students are required to complete the appeal process before registering for classes. If you have been suspended or dismissed, please click on the appropriate link for more information.
Please note there are established dates for submitting the appeals. The deadline for appealing are:
- Spring 2010 Semester - October 31, 2009
- Summer 2010 Semester - March 31, 2010
- Fall 2010 Semester - July 10, 2010

Other Admissions Details:
High School and home-school students may dual enroll with permission of their high school principals (or home schooling parents) and after satisfactory completion of TNCC placement tests (for students taking classes on a TNCC campus, only). Dual enrolled students are not eligible to take developmental courses and cannot receive financial aid.
Students on suspension or dismissal from TNCC or any other higher education institution are not automatically admitted or readmitted. They must file an appeal and an official transcript after a waiting period. Contact the Admissions Office for details.
Under the Senior Citizen Higher Education Act of 1974, students at least 60 years of age who have been domiciled in Virginia for one year are eligible to audit up to three courses per semester free. Additionally, if their federally taxable income did not exceed $10,000 for the year preceding enrollment, they may take credit courses without cost.
The first registration date for those taking advantage of the Senior Citizens Program is published on the Academic Calendar. Please note that classes fill early and selection is limited. The college complies with the Senior Citizens Higher Education Act of 1974. The Admissions staff should be consulted for details and assistance at 825-2800 (room 201, Griffin Hall or the Historic Triangle Office).
