Is DL right for you? Characteristics of a successful DL student

Successful Online Learners are able to:

  • Assess his or her technical abilities
  • Perform basic computer and Internet Browsing functions and word processing
  • Manage time to complete tasks and meet deadlines
  • Communicate efficiently and effectively in writing and through voicemail
  • Direct his or her learning by working independently

25 things a successful online student should be able to do within the first week of the course:

Access and Login   (1) Login to course site
Course Orientation   (2) Navigate the course
(3) Obtain required course materials such as
textbooks, CDROM’s and course packs
The Course Timeline
 
  (4) Access the course schedule to be informed of important dates and deadlines
Required Face-to-Face Meetings   (5) Attend (if required) the face-to-face meetings on the proper day at the proper time and location
Browsers, Downloads and Players   (6) Access to a computer with the minimum hardware and software requirements for the course
(7) Download required browsers, viewers and players
Netiquette   (8) Compose course assignments, E-mail messages and discussion board postings using appropriate tone, language, grammar and spelling (no flaming!)
(9) Avoid cheating, plagiarism or giving or receiving unauthorized assistance on tests or assignments
Communication Processes   (10) Send and receive E-mail
(11) Post to a discussion board
 
Testing Procedures   (12) Access a test, submit a test, and check a test grade online
(13) Download and submit proctor forms if required by the instructor

Assignments

  (14) Save in the required format, complete and submit an assignments per the instructors directions

Critical Policies

  (15) Submit late or make-up work
(16) Use resources without plagiarizing

Online Services

  (17) Register and withdraw from courses online
(18) Access online library services
(19) Access help desk services

Group Work

  (20) Use group communication and collaboration tools
(21) Play a responsible role in a group, contribute in a timely manner, collaborate to complete the assigned task, meet group deadlines, avoid controlling or monopolizing the group.

Feedback

  (22) Provide meaningful feedback in a timely manner

Contingency Planning

  (23) Access a secondary computer if his/her primary computer fails
(24) Document dates and times assignments were submitted by the use of E-mail date and time stamps, document properties or electronic submission receipts
(25) Retain copies of all submitted assignments
