TNCC’s Top Two Academic Awards Being Presented during 44th Commencement Ceremony

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) named Michael D. Snyder and Megan V. Saunders as recipients of the 2012-2013 President’s and Vice President’s awards, respectively. In acknowledgement of the two summa cum laude graduates’ exceptional academic performance, the awards will be presented during TNCC’s 44th commencement exercises on Tuesday, May 14 at 7 p.m. at the Hampton Coliseum.
Snyder and Saunders are among nearly 1,400 students who have applied to graduate during the 2012-2013 academic year. This figure includes students who completed their curriculum requirements in summer 2012, fall 2012, and those who applied for graduation in spring 2013. Graduating students will receive Associate degrees, certificates, career studies certificates, or a combination of these academic credentials. Criteria for the President’s and Vice President’s awards include attaining the highest cumulative grade point average, completing at least 60 semester hours of course work and receiving an Associate’s Degree for the current year, and more.

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will present the Thomas Nelson Medallion and Dana B. Hamel Award during its 44th commencement ceremony on Tuesday, May 14 at the Hampton Coliseum. Presented by TNCC’s Local College Board, the awards honor citizens who champion higher education and public service.
The Thomas Nelson Medallion honors citizens who exemplify the spirit and highest ideals of Thomas Nelson – patriot, soldier-statesman and governor. The medallion will be awarded posthumously to both Mr. Joseph A. Gutierrez, Jr. and Mr. Roosevelt “Rosy” Takesian. Members of their families will accept the awards.

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will celebrate its 44th commencement ceremony Tuesday, May 14 at 7 p.m. at Hampton Coliseum.
The commencement speaker is Mr. John R. Broderick, the eighth president of Old Dominion University (ODU). As president, Broderick guides the University’s six colleges and more than 10 economic development and research centers. He also maintains partnerships with government, military and business organizations and agencies.
In addition, Broderick serves as one of six college presidents on the Governor’s Commission on Higher Education Reform, Innovation and Investment. In 2012, he was appointed to the American Association of State Colleges and Universities Council of State Representatives. During the same year, he received the 2012 American College Personnel Association’s Contribution to Higher Education Award for his leadership in student success initiatives.
Open Auditions for TNCC’s Production of ‘The Mikado’ April 14 & 16

Do you have a passion for the stage? Now is the time to show off your acting ability. Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Department of Performing Arts will present Gilbert and Sullivan’s comedic opera, “The Mikado” July 12-21. Open auditions will be held at 7 p.m. April 14 and 16 on the Hampton campus on the first floor of Templin Hall.
Audition participants will be asked to prepare two contrasting musical selections no more than one minute each and two contrasting monologues not to exceed two minutes each. Ideally, all audition materials should be performed from memory. An accompanist will be provided for musical selections. Five men, four women and a chorus of school-girls, nobles and guards will be selected for the production.
“The Mikado,” set in Japan, is a twisted tale of love, politics and crime. First performed in London in 1885, it remains one of the most popular musical theater productions of all time.

TNCC Chorus Presents Spring Concert, April 25

Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Concert Choir will present a spring concert Thursday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium, Templin Hall, Hampton campus. The concert is free and open to the public.
The performance will feature works by Palestrina, Moses Hogan and Richard Rodgers.
Michael Sundblad, Chair of TNCC’s Department of Music and Performing Arts, will serve as conductor. Pianist Nancy Verry will accompany the vocalists.
The performance is made possible with the support of the TNCC Educational Foundation, City of Hampton, Hampton Arts Commission, Newport News Arts Commission and the City of Newport News. Free Autism Awareness Workshop April 2 at TNCC

Autism will be the focus of a free workshop at Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) on Tuesday, April 2 on the Hampton campus in the Wythe Hall Gallery. The one-hour event takes place at 12 p.m. with presenter Dr. Maria Urbano of Eastern Virginia Medical School’s (EVMS) Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science.
Dr. Urbano will share her knowledge, experience and insight into this growing field of research focusing on young adults on the autism spectrum and those that are diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. Students with autism in higher education, careers and accommodations and how to focus on their strengths will also be among topics.
