Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) Dental Hygiene graduates have achieved a 100 percent pass rate on national board and licensing exams marking the second consecutive year the program experienced such success.

The College added the Associate Degree Program in Dental Hygiene in August 2010 to complement its offerings in the Health Professions division. Housed at TNCC’s Historic Triangle campus in Williamsburg, the program had seven graduates this year and eight in 2012. “All [15 students] passed the National Boards and SRTA [Southern Regional Testing Agency] licensing exam the first time. Our students are performing above the national average,” said TNCC’s Dental Hygiene Program Director Dr. Harold Marioneaux.

A 2013 graduate, Kathryn Owen, is happy about passing board and licensing exams at first attempt and she is equally excited about her future. “I feel well educated and prepared for my work field. TNCC has fabulous instructors in the Dental Hygiene program. They take time to prepare each lesson in regard to what has been on previous boards. My best experience at TNCC was graduation and the feeling of accomplishment [and] knowing that dreams do come true through hard work and dedication,” she said.

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) Associate Professor of Biology Martin Zahn along with students, Olivia Awate and David Dittrich, are spending this summer conducting research at the College of William and Mary (W&M) as part of a faculty-student exchange program.

The research team started the 10-week program on May 28 and will examine viruses that infect bacteria (bacteriophages) and their host bacteria to learn various things about DNA. “The students are an integral part of the program. They will work in the lab with me and will learn the techniques to isolate DNA, sequence DNA, determine where the virus in question should be classified, and investigate host range. Essentially, we will work as a team in coordination with faculty from W&M,” said Zahn.

“Beyond the refreshing experience in my craft, I have the opportunity to work daily with supportive research faculty and learn how to use advanced equipment that I might never be able to use otherwise,” he added.

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) welcomes Lara M.S. Overy as the new Director of Development. As a member of TNCC’s Institutional Advancement team, Overy directs and manages the College’s development and outreach efforts to the community by seeking private funds to enable TNCC to enhance new and current programs, services and facilities. “We are pleased to welcome Lara Overy to TNCC to lead its development effort, and we look forward to working with her to garner greater support for our students from the businesses, organizations and individuals served by the College,” said Cynthia Callaway, TNCC’s Vice President of Institutional Advancement.

Prior to joining TNCC, Overy served as Tidewater Community College’s (TCC) Executive Director of the Educational Foundation and Director of Development. She led the Development team in securing private, corporate, and foundation funding for TCC. She also coordinated the Educational Foundation’s fundraising efforts and represented the interests of both the College and the Foundation to current and prospective donors. Under Overy’s leadership, TCC’s Development Team exceeded its goals and increased the number of donors.

A magna cum laude graduate of Thomas Nelson, Overy knows the value of community colleges firsthand. “Who better to advocate for TNCC than a graduate who can personally acknowledge the high quality education and training provided by the College? She can also relate to the challenges faced by today’s community college students,” Callaway said.
