Satisfactory Academic Progress
To comply with federal regulations, Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) is required to establish qualitative and quantitative measures of academic achievement. Students are expected to attend all classes for which they are enrolled and to put forth their best effort toward academic achievement. Financial aid eligibility for developmental courses and ESL is limited to 30 credits. Academic records are reviewed at the end of each semester after grades have been posted.
If a student does not:
- Satisfactorily complete 67% of all TNCC credits.
The Financial Aid Office will:
- Place the student on Financial Aid Suspension; the student will not be eligible for financial aid until he/she has satisfactorily completed 67% of the credits he/she has enrolled in and meets all of the College’s Standards of Academic Progress.
Note:
This policy applies regardless of whether or not the student previously received financial aid at TNCC.
Courses with a grade of A, B, C, D, P, S or R are considered satisfactory for financial aid purposes and are included in this calculation.
Courses with a grade of F, W, U, X or I are considered unsatisfactory for financial aid purposes and are included in this calculation.
Completion rates are reviewed once a student has attempted 50% of the course work for the plan/program or 24 credit hours, whichever comes first.
If a student does not:
- Complete his/her current academic plan/program by the end of 150% of the academic plan length, regardless of whether or not he/she previously received any financial aid.
The Financial Aid Office will:
- Place the student on Financial Aid Suspension; the student will not be eligible for financial aid and must complete the academic plan/program at his/her expense.
Note:
This policy applies regardless of whether or not the student previously received financial aid at TNCC.
Transfer credits are included in determining the number of semesters the student has been at the college.
If the student changes his/her academic plan/program, he/she will not necessarily be granted additional financial aid to complete his/her academic plan/program.
Developmental and ESL courses are not included in this calculation.
If a student does not:
- Maintain the minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) in accordance with the following schedule:
- Units Attempted Cumulative GPA
- 13 - 24 : 1.5
- 25 - 47 : 1.75
- 48+ : 2.0
The Financial Aid Office will:
- Place the student on Financial Aid Suspension; the student will not be eligible for financial aid until the minimum cumulative GPA is met.
Note:
This policy applies regardless of whether or not the student previously received financial aid at TNCC.
Students must have earned a 2.0 or higher overall GPA by the time they have attempted 75% of their plan/program. Developmental or ESL courses are not included in this calculation. Repeated courses are included in this calculation in accordance with TNCC’s academic standards of progress.
Loss of Eligibility
The Financial Aid Office will notify students at their VCCS e-mail address that they have not maintained Satisfactory Academic Progress. Students are responsible for keeping track of their academic progress after each term. Failure to receive notice in writing is not a valid reason to have aid reinstated or to have the appeal deadline extended. Students may appeal their financial aid suspension prior to the beginning of each term.
Financial Aid Suspension should not be confused with Academic Suspension which is suspension from the college. Students on Financial Aid Suspension may still attend TNCC, but will no longer receive financial aid.
Appeal Loss of Eligibility
If students have mitigating circumstances (ex. death in family or personal illness), they may appeal suspension of financial aid. Students who appeal should complete the Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal with a letter explaining their situation and any supporting documentation indicating reasons for not making satisfactory academic progress. Students who are reinstated must meet specific conditions of their appeal to maintain eligibility for financial assistance. |
