What's New!

TNCC now offers a brand new A.S. in Information Technology degree and two new career study certificate programs - Information Assurance and Geographic Information Systems. Students may elect to take any or all IST courses for these, and other IST career study certificates, online as distance learning courses.

GIS Program Website       GIS Program Information

Geographic Information Systems use computer technology for collecting, analyzing and displaying digital geographic data.  It includes the fields of spatial analysis, remote sensing, global positioning systems and cartography (map-making). This technology can enable a medical company to track Colorectal Cancer screening rates to determine how best to construct an intervention plan to increase screenings; a company to evaluate and locate the best place to build a cellular telephone tower; a city to determine the best location for a hospital in accordance with population.

GIS is one of the top 10 fields projected for employment growth in this area. This program requires a strong background in microcomputer applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and Internet and World Wide Web literacy. Students should take ITD 130 either before or with GIS 200.
