The U.S. Department of Education will offer qualified borrowers a short-term loan consolidation opportunity from January through June 30, 2012, as announced on October 26, 2011. To help provide guidance to your students, keep in mind the following details.
- This program is not yet available and not everyone will qualify. Beginning in January, federal loan servicers will contact student loan borrowers who qualify.
- It’s important for borrowers to wait for eligibility notification and application instructions to determine if they qualify. After receiving instructions, qualified borrowers will be able to apply through a new online process.
For more information, student borrowers are encouraged to visit Federal Student Aid’s Special Direct Consolidation Loan page or contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center at (800) 433-3243 or (800) 4 FED AID.
