The library maintains an extensive collection of childrens’ books dealing with disabilities. Even for adults, these books can provide a good, quick introduction to various disabilities and of course, are extensively illustrated. The collection is kept on reserve at the circulation desk and may be browsed in the catalog under the subject heading Special needs children

- Assistive Media – “We provide audio access to reading materials for anyone with a reading access barrier. Talented volunteers record magazine articles and other short works which are then available for download or in our podcast. There are over 800 recordings from magazines like The New Yorker, Smithsonian, and Wired.”
- Deaf Resource Library – “an online collection of reference material and links intended to educate and inform people about Deaf cultures in Japan and the United States; as well as deaf and hard of hearing related topics.” Includes bibliographies, deaf community resources, organizations, deaf culture resources, schools and universities, scholarship info, and more. Though the absence of a navigational guide means you have to scroll your way through the resources to find what you’re looking for, the site is quite useful.
- Disabled Travelers.com – Comprehensive listings of: Travel Agents, Tour Operators, Adventure Travel Companies, Accessible Van & Equipment Rentals, Travel Companions, Home Exchanges, and Access Guides for wheelchair users and other disabled travelers.
- Disability Rights and Independent Living Movement – A “rich collection of primary sources exploring the social and political history of the disability movement from the 1960s to the present,” including oral histories and personal papers of people involved in the movement. Also includes a timeline and a webliography of
related resources. - Guide to Wheelchairs and Assistive Technology: USA TechGuide – “A Web Guide to wheelchair and assistive technology choices, wheelchair views and reviews, and related information and articles. Promoting user involvement in the selection of appropriate assistive technology.”
- Mis-understood Minds – Background information from the PBS special about learning differences
and difficulties. Include exercises to simulate the experience of various learning disabilities. Also has
an extensive reading and resources list. - National Rehabilitation Information Center – For the public, resources for independent living cover topics like caregiving, home modification, travel, rehabilitation success/outcome, etc. Researchers can search through REHABDATA, NIDRR projects, and the NARIC Knowledgebase for information and referral.
