Former Newport News School Board Chairman John W. McMillan Jr. was recently appointed to the Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) Board by the Newport News City Council. The College Board is comprised of 14 members from six localities in TNCC’s service area and acts in an advisory capacity to the State Board for Community Colleges and TNCC President John T. Dever.
A retired U.S. Air Force officer, McMillan will complete the unexpired term of Mary B. Oder. In addition to his military and public service background, he has 24 years of experience as a systems analyst and retired from the MITRE Corporation having been an associate project leader.
McMillan has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Virginia Tech and a Master’s degree in Computer Science from West Virginia University. A member of the Newport News Education Foundation since 2005, he coordinates its annual Wayne D. Lett Scholarship program, is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Denbigh and is an avid golfer.
McMillan and his wife, Madeline, former Newport News Vice Mayor, have been Virginia Peninsula residents for 34 years.
