TNCC Historic Triangle enrollment expected to blossom

The Daily Press

Thomas Nelson Community College has conducted classes in various spaces around Williamsburg for a long time, but this fall it opens the first building on a permanent satellite campus there.

Tours are available to the public between now and Aug. 20. Classes start Aug. 22.

Future plans for the campus call for additional buildings if and when student enrollment demands it and state funds are available, said TNCC Historic Triangle Provost William Travis.

If trends hold, enrollment will continue to grow. Enrollment in classes conducted at the college’s Historic Triangle sites has steadily grown over the past three years, except for a slight drop from 738 students the spring semester of 2006 to 731 in the spring of 2007.

For the fall, 749 students were enrolled in 2006, 966 in 2007 and 1,117 in 2008.

In spring 2008, there were 850 students enrolled in classes, and that number rose to 1,102 this past spring. These numbers do not count students who are dual enrolled, which means they are high school students taking courses for college credit.

TNCC Readies New Campus

The Daily Press

Construction workers scurried around Thomas Nelson Community College’s Historic Triangle Campus on Tuesday as they put finishing touches on the first building of the school’s new James City County location.

About a dozen workers spent the afternoon landscaping the exterior of the building and wiring classrooms for new equipment and technology as TNCC officials gear up for July 6, when students will use the building for the first time as they register for the fall semester, which begins Aug. 22.

The three-story masonry and brick building — projected to cost more than $28 million — is one of five being planned for the 73-acre site next to Warhill High School on Opportunity Way, just off Centerville Road.

The college has operated out of temporary facilities at Busch Corporate Center for years, but chose more than five years ago to build a larger and permanent campus to better serve its population of 1,250 students.

TNCC interim head hopes to ‘protect’ budget

The Daily Press

Community colleges play a vital and expanding role in their local communities and Thomas Nelson on the Peninsula is a great example of that, interim President Alvin Schexnider told the Daily Press Editorial Board Thursday.

As the General Assembly scrutinizes the state budget, state community college officials are working to preserve their funding. Schexnider took over at TNCC Oct. 1 after Charles Taylor left for a nine-month sabbatical to work for the Virginia Community College System in Richmond.

Schexnider’s background is at larger, four-year universities. But he is well-versed in the state’s budget history, and the drill colleges go through during financial shortfalls.

TNCC expansion nears completion, classes set for fall

The Daily Press

Thomas Nelson Community College’s new Historic Triangle campus is now expected to open in the fall.

The first building will be completed this spring, according to Historic Triangle campus Provost William Travis. It is located next to Warhill High School in James City County, and is a three-story, 120,000-square-foot facility.

“We plan to start to deliver classes in the new building next fall,” Travis said. “We expect to get occupancy late spring or early summer, with the college still having quite a bit to do to set up information technology systems and set up furniture. So we’re not going to try to move classes in the middle of a semester.

“I think we can see more problems with that than we can see benefit.”

The college’s dental hygiene program, projected to start in August 2010, will be housed there.

An October timeline for the new offering had it moving into the renovated Hampton III building on the Hampton campus.

Historic Triangle Construction Update: December 2008

The new Historic Triangle campus is poised to open in 2009 as construction nears completion. Recently taken photos of the building’s exterior show how the campus is taking shape.

The first photo shows the graded roadway around the front of the building which will not be open for regular traffic; fire trucks and ambulances must have complete access to the structure. The second and third photos show outside benches being installed at the new Historic during the week of December 1.

Historic Triangle Construction Update: November 2008

Photographs taken recently at the new Historic Triangle campus on Opportunity Way at the Warhill site show that a number of areas are taking shape in preparation for the campus’s 2009 opening.

The first photo looks into the “student services” area from behind the staircase. The second is the view from inside the student services area. As shown in the photo, someone located at the reception desk will be able to see visitors entering the building and visitors will be able to see that individual as well.

The next picture shows the faculty office area on the second floor providing a good idea of the general layout and the fourth is of the general purpose classroom (Historic Triangle version of Espada) also on the second floor.  Note that it also has a row of windows to the front of the building and it also has windows that look to the top of the staircase from the first floor.

The fifth photo in this series shows two offices from the general work area.  The final picture is of the Student Activities area from the hallway and also shows two additional offices totaling four.  This is on the second floor on the east side of the central wing – very close to the wellness center.
