TNCC Closed Half Day Aug. 16 for Faculty, Staff Training

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will be closed to the public from 8 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. on Monday, August 16 for All College Day. All faculty and staff will be participating in professional development activities at the Hampton campus. Services will resume at TNCC locations in Hampton and Williamsburg at 2:15 p.m.

All College Day officially marks the beginning of a new academic year at TNCC. In preparation for the fall semester, all faculty and staff will be attending various forums, presentations, and professional development activities.

TNCC Hosts Career Camp for Teens June 21-25

Some local high school students in grades 10 and 11 will be off to camp this summer but not just any ordinary summer camp. Thanks to career coaches at Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Office of Outreach and Recruitment and the Newport News Public Schools Career and Technical Education (CTE) Department these campers will be on the fast track to charting plans for their future careers.

Set for June 21-25 on TNCC’s Hampton campus and open to 25 students, the summer camp is called Time for New Career Choices: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM ) 101. The weeklong camp will give students an opportunity to explore careers in the healthcare field that are STEM-related.

Register today for a Financial Literacy Workshop

Financial Aid, Veteran Affairs and Scholarship Office at Thomas Nelson Community College will be conducting student aid workshops throughout the month of April in observance of National Financial Literacy Month. The workshops will cover a variety of topics such as “Completing the 2010-2011 FAFSA”, “Making a Budget”, “Understanding Credit”, “Keeping your Identity Safe”, and “Saving for Goals”.

TNCC Book Club Invites Public to April 21 Group Discussion

Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Book Circles will kick off its spring season with a discussion group meeting on Wednesday, April 21 on the Hampton Campus. Reading enthusiasts from throughout the community can join TNCC’s Book Circles at 3 p.m. in Library Gallery, Wythe Hall, for discussions about “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith and Walter Mosley’s “Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned.”

“Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” is a 2009 mashup that combines the classic 19th century tale of manners and status with modern action involving zombies and ninjas. While preserving much of Austen’s original text, Grahame-Smith introduces a zombie-invasion, ninja training and action-packed mayhem in the New York Times Bestseller.

March Session of TNCC Speaker Series Explores General Assembly Actions

President Alvin J. Schexnider invites the public to the Hampton campus on Tuesday, March 30 for a presentation titled, “The Deliberations of the Virginia General Assembly and the Implications for the Peninsula.” Dr. Quentin Kidd, Associate Professor of Political Science and Department of Government Chair at Christopher Newport University, is guest speaker. The free presentation begins at 7:30 a.m. in room 1302 of the Peninsula Workforce Development Center, 600 Butler Farm Road.

The breakfast meeting is part of a Speakers Series launched last year at TNCC to give community leaders an opportunity to convene with area educators and discuss important regional and national issues.

Free Public Forum at TNCC Examines Human Existence Past, Present and Future

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) joins the Lutheran Council of Tidewater to present a free public forum on TNCC’s Hampton campus titled, “Convergence: What Does it Mean to be Human? … From Apes and Early Humans to Trans-human Cyborgs.” The panel discussion takes place Tuesday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium located in Templin Hall.

Dr. Charles Smith, who teaches Biology and Religious Studies at TNCC, will serve as moderator for guest panelists Dr. Barbara King of the College of William and Mary and Dr. Philip Hefner, professor emeritus of systematic theology for the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, Illinois. The two educators will present their views on human nature, its relationship with the apes and human ancestors, and they will look ahead to the future of human technology and spirituality. After each speaker’s 30-minute presentation, both will take questions and comments from the audience.

Honor Society at TNCC Launches Lecture Series March 23

The Phi Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society at Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will launch a lecture series beginning Tuesday, March 23 based on the topic, Do You Know? The series of three lectures featuring TNCC students and members of the community will be conducted on the Hampton campus. Free and open to the public, the lectures all begin at 6 p.m. in the Espada Room at Moore Hall.

The first in the series – Do You Know What Cancer Is? – will be presented by a representative from the American Cancer Society. The speaker will address questions about cancer prevention, detection and other related topics. The lecture will also include information about the upcoming Relay for Life events to raise money for cancer research.

TNCC’s Observes Women’s History Month Beginning March 10

Throughout March, TNCC will participate in a statewide celebration called, “Minds Wide Open: Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts” in observance of Women’s History Month. The first celebration of its kind in Virginia, “Minds Wide Open” will focus on the artistic and cultural contributions of women. Thousands of performances and displays are expected statewide during the celebration, according to the website http://vamindswideopen.org/.
