TNCC program offers student fast track to success

Last year, John Mitchell walked into Thomas Nelson Community College Workforce Development looking for a successful career. One year later, he is living his dream. On July 22, he began his career as a nuclear pharmacist technician and plans to continue on his path to becoming a nuclear pharmacist.

The Pharmacy Technician Certificate Program is just one example of accelerated workforce training that TNCC offers for in-demand careers. These programs are ideal for dislocated workers who need to train for new careers quickly and for busy adults who want to increase their earning potential. Mitchell used the services of the One-Stop center to search for a career and identify funding to help finance his education. The Center is located in the Peninsula Workforce Development Center adjacent to the TNCC Hampton campus.

“Everyone said it would take me five years, but I didn’t have that long,” says Mitchell. Thanks to TNCC I was able to finish the program in three months and start my new career within one year.” [Read more →]

Newport News Notebook: have a conversation about poverty

BY SABINE HIRSCHAUER

9:54 PM EDT, July 14, 2009

If you can spare a minute or two and have a thought, an idea or opinion on how to fight poverty in your community, join in a conversation this weekend.

Act on Poverty is a poverty summit and a simultaneous conversation Saturday. The Peninsula location and time is from 10 a.m. to noon at Thomas Nelson Community College’s Peninsula Workforce Development Center. The sessions will be held in Rooms 1301 to 1303 at 600 Butler Farm Road in Hampton.

TNCC is one of the 26 community colleges across the state participating on Saturday.

Food for thought about poverty:

• Virginia has the 10th-lowest poverty rate nationwide, according to a recent 2009 American Community Survey, but that rate remained pretty much unchanged since 1989.

• About 50 percent of poor Virginians are white, nearly 37 percent are black and the rest are Hispanic and Asian.

• Most of poor Virginians — more than 20 percent — have less than a high school education, and nearly 70 percent of impoverished children live in families headed by a single mother.

On Saturday, people can also share their ideas via e-mail to poverty@governor.virginia.gov.

Act on Poverty will be the largest ever, simultaneous conversation focusing on fighting Virginia’s poverty, according to state officials.

TNCC Launches New Clinical Medical Assistant Program in Williamsburg

Williamsburg, VA – Williamsburg residents now have convenient training close to home. For the first time, Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) in partnership with Boston Reed College will offer a one-day-a-week, fast paced Certified Clinical Medical Assistant training program at the new Discovery Center for Economic and Workforce Development in Williamsburg. Classes for this affordable, six-month program are offered only on Saturdays, making it ideal for busy adults seeking a quick entry into the health care industry. The program begins July 25, 2009 and ends on Saturday, January 23, 2010.

“We want to provide accelerated short-term training opportunities for people living in the Historic Triangle area,” said Dr. Denise Seigfeldt, TNCC Director of Continuing and Professional Education. “With the current economic downturn and layoffs, people are looking for fast career training that will lead to good-paying jobs. This program meets their needs,” adds Siegfeldt. The program offers a hands-on externship for all participants, and education loans are available.

Health care is one of the largest employment sectors in the country, and job opportunities are expected to increase as baby boomers age. Clinical medical assistant duties range from recording vital signs to filing medical records. Starting pay averages $10-$16 per hour. TNCC Workforce Development offers a full range of health care training and certification programs that are available during day, evening and weekend hours. In addition to the Clinical Medical Assistant program, the college also offers Orthopedic Technician, Medical Billing and Coding Specialist and Pharmacy Technician programs. With these certificates and additional training, people may pursue nursing or more advanced jobs. For more information, visit http://www.tncc.edu/workforce or call 757-825-2937.

Free Microsoft Training and Tech Vouchers Available for VCCS Institutions to Distribute

RICHMOND — Governor Timothy M. Kaine has announced that Virginia will join forces with Microsoft in an innovative public-private partnership to provide free technology training to displaced workers. Through the Microsoft Elevate America program, the software and technology giant will work with the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) to distribute 11,250 vouchers for technology training and certification. Elevate America also provides a wide variety of other free resources on its website including basic skills training and career resources to find internships and jobs. (The specially dedicated telephone number set up at Thomas Nelson’s Workforce Development for Elevate America is 865-5874).

“Virginia already has one of the best workforce development systems in the country—this program means we’ll have another exciting tool at our disposal,” said Governor Kaine. “This partnership will provide thousands of Virginians with the technology skills they need to attain and sustain employment as the economy recovers. At the same time, this critical training will ensure Virginia’s workforce emerges from this economic downturn stronger than ever—and ready to compete on a global level.”

Virginia will receive 5,000 vouchers for intermediate level online training, 5,000 vouchers for Microsoft business certification exams, and 1,250 vouchers for advanced technical professional online training:

  • Each intermediate level training voucher can be used for training on Microsoft Windows or one of the products in the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Each testing voucher can be used for a Microsoft business certification exam, which when passed signifies a student is Microsoft certified in either Windows Vista or a specific Microsoft Office product.
  • Advanced level vouchers are redeemable for training for individuals on technical professional career tracks in areas such as web development or database management.

In its role as Microsoft’s “designated partner” for administration of Elevate America in Virginia, VCCS will work with the Department of Education and Virginia’s workforce centers to distribute 1,500 training vouchers, 1,500 testing vouchers, and 400 advanced level vouchers each. VCCS will retain the remaining vouchers for distribution as needed. Vouchers will be distributed to citizens across the state on a first come, first served basis starting today.
