TNCC’s New Dental Hygiene Program Earns Accreditation
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Dental Hygiene Program has been accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and granted “initial accreditation” status. A specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education, CODA conducted an on-site review at TNCC in March, and as required, has scheduled its next on-site evaluation for spring 2012 before the program’s first class graduates.
The College added the Associate Degree Program in Dental Hygiene to complement its Allied Health offerings. Occupying 5,000 square-feet on the second floor of TNCC’s Historic Triangle campus facility, the program starts its first classes this month.
“I’m excited. It takes two years with a full-time Dental Hygiene faculty to prepare and submit the materials to CODA. We completed this task, conducted the site visit, received Virginia Community College System approval, approval from the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia and received our accreditation designation in 15 months. That’s fantastic,” said TNCC’s Dental Hygiene Program Director Harold Marioneaux.

TNCC Book Club at Historic Traingle Hosts Group Discussion April 16
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Thomas Nelson Community College’s Literature Circles kicks off its spring season with a discussion group meeting on Friday, April 16 on the Historic Triangle campus. Reading enthusiasts from throughout the community are invited to join TNCC students, faculty and staff at 1 p.m. in room 316 for discussions about Octavia Butler’s “Kindred” and “The Last Lecture” by Randy Pausch.
“Kindred” is the story of Dana Franklin, a black woman in 1976 suburban Los Angeles who is transported to an 1815 slave-holding plantation in Maryland. She has been called to save the son of the plantation master — her great-great-grandfather, Rufus Weylin, who has the ability to summon Dana to the antebellum South when he’s in trouble. She can only return to the present when her life is threatened. Over and over and at increasing risk, she is called to protect Rufus. Meanwhile in the present, Dana is married to Kevin, a gentle and progressive white man who can adjust with relative ease to 19th century life by virtue of his race and gender.

Boating Laws Change on July 1, 2010; TNCC Class Helps Personal Watercraft Operators and Boaters Comply
Boating laws have changed. Effective July 1, 2010, personal watercraft operators under 35 years of age must complete a boating safety course. Thomas Nelson Community College Workforce Development now offers a boating safety course for boaters 13 years and older. The class meets the new education compliance requirements.
In 2007, the Virginia General Assembly enacted a law establishing a boating safety education compliance requirement. Personal Watercraft operators 20 years old and younger were required to meet this requirement as of July 1, 2009. Requirements will be phased in over the next several years and by 2016, all operators of PWCs (Personal Watercraft such as jet skis, Sea Doos, Wave Runners) and operators of Motorboats with a 10 hp or greater motor, will be required to have a boating safety education course completion card on board when operating a PWC or Motorboat.

TNCC Student Attended Class in Real-time From Middle East
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – When Navy Reservist David Fraley received orders to go to Kuwait, he wasn’t ready to stop attending class at Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC). With help from Assistant Professor of English Diana Martin, Fraley interacted in real-time with TNCC students in ENG 262: Creative Writing, a class held at the Historic Triangle campus in Williamsburg. When the class convened at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, it was 3 a.m. on Wednesday in Kuwait.
Fraley is one of the many students at TNCC who employ distance learning tools. The College delivers distance education through several means including podcasting, Blackboard and Adobe Acrobat Connect Pro, a software that allows instructors and students to interact live and facilitate distance classes in real-time. The software permits the use of Microsoft PowerPoint slides, application sharing, as well as live and recorded video, among other things.

TNCC’s Nursing Program to Triple in Size at Historic Triangle Campus
Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will triple the size of its Nursing program at the Historic Triangle campus in Williamsburg during the spring 2010 semester. The College will welcome 30 students into the program normally limited to 10 new students. The increased admission is attributed to the larger facilities at the College’s newest campus. Opened in July, the Historic Triangle campus is a 120,000 square-foot facility that sits on more than 74 acres of land next to Warhill High School at 4601 Opportunity Way in Williamsburg.
“The classrooms are state-of-the-art with Smartboards and high-tech sound. The Nursing lab is very spacious with a large nurse’s station, seven complete hospital beds with mannequins and examination equipment, computer stations, and a simulation mannequin,” said Associate Professor of Nursing Pam Biernacki.

TNCC Historic Triangle enrollment expected to blossom
Thomas Nelson Community College has conducted classes in various spaces around Williamsburg for a long time, but this fall it opens the first building on a permanent satellite campus there.
Tours are available to the public between now and Aug. 20. Classes start Aug. 22.
Future plans for the campus call for additional buildings if and when student enrollment demands it and state funds are available, said TNCC Historic Triangle Provost William Travis.
If trends hold, enrollment will continue to grow. Enrollment in classes conducted at the college’s Historic Triangle sites has steadily grown over the past three years, except for a slight drop from 738 students the spring semester of 2006 to 731 in the spring of 2007.
For the fall, 749 students were enrolled in 2006, 966 in 2007 and 1,117 in 2008.
In spring 2008, there were 850 students enrolled in classes, and that number rose to 1,102 this past spring. These numbers do not count students who are dual enrolled, which means they are high school students taking courses for college credit.
