Thomas Nelson Community College’s Lady Gators are taking the basketball court in new uniforms this season thanks to funding from the Hampton Roads Educators' Credit Union, Inc. (HRECU).
In a partnership established last year, HRECU pledged funds totaling $7,500 over three years to the College’s Educational Foundation to support Thomas Nelson sports. The local credit union contributed $5,000 last year, $1,250 this year and will donate a final $1,250 next year.
Pictured with HRECU Chief Executive Officer and Manager Karen Orie, the women’s basketball team became a National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) member last year after more than 25 years as a club program. The Lady Gators made their NJCAA debut last November at a tournament in Louisburg, N.C.
"Thomas Nelson's NJCAA membership is a great benefit. It raises the College's profile as well as that of the student athletes," said Chad Smith, the College’s Athletics and Intramurals coordinator.
Smith expressed appreciation to HRECU for facilitating purchase of the new uniforms. He said the credit union's generous financial support will also help address other sports program needs such as equipment and facility rentals as assessed through 2019.
In addition to men’s and women's basketball teams, Thomas Nelson has an NJCAA-member baseball team. The team last year boasted an NJCAA Division III All-Region10 first team catcher, who was also selected as a NJCAA D-III second-team All-American catcher.
The College's basketball season is in full swing with home games taking place at Hampton's Bethel High School, 1067 Big Bethel Road. Admission is free with valid Thomas Nelson student ID, $5 for College personnel and $6 general admission.
