Published: July 28, 2008

An Open Registration Night scheduled for Thursday, July 31 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Thomas Nelson Community College’s Southeast Higher Education Center will feature the educational opportunities available to the community this fall. The Center is located at 5720 Marshall Ave. in Newport News. Participants will be able to obtain information about applying for admission, financial aid opportunities and course offerings. Representatives from these departments will be available to answer questions and assist students with registration. Instructors, department deans, and representatives from Student Services will also be in attendance to welcome and assist prospective students.

The Southeast Higher Education Center gives students an opportunity to work toward earning a career certificate in Administrative Assistant Office Manager, Medical Office Assistant, Information Technology, and Microcomputer Applications or starting an associate degree program. This fall, the College is offering 22 courses including English, Math, History, Keyboarding, Sociology and Psychology to name a few.

Quashea McRae, Coordinator for the Southeast Higher Education Center said, “We are excited about the Fall 2008 semester. This year we are offering more courses and greater flexibility of class schedules. Students have responded well to evening and weekend courses and we want to continue to meet their needs. Thomas Nelson is delighted with the welcoming response to the Southeast Higher Education Center and our goal is to continue to expand and deliver academic excellence while supporting our students as they “Explore, Excel and Succeed.”

Thomas Nelson Community College launched the Southeast Higher Education Center in association with An Achievable Dream Middle and High School and the Newport News Public School System, offering evening and weekend courses to adult learners. Since the Center opened its doors in Fall 2007, enrollment has increased more than 180 percent from 68 students last fall to 191 at the end of spring 2008.

Fall semester classes at TNCC start on Saturday, August 23. Tuition at TNCC is $81.65 dollars per credit hour for in-state tuition and a technology fee of $4.50 per credit hour. Tuition at community colleges is about one-third of the cost of attending a Virginia public four-year institution.

TNCC is also partnering with Edmonds Community College of Everett, Washington, to develop a SpaceTEC concentration exam in composites.  This exam will soon be available for SpaceTEC Certified Aerospace Technicians who have acquired expertise in composites, either through academic courses or experience, and desire to obtain an additional certification.  SpaceTEC also has other concentrations in development at other partner institutions, including one in vehicle processing.
