The Virginia Peninsula – An infectious blend of African, Latin, swing, and R&B rhythms will excite the audience of the Mary T. Christian Auditorium, when percussionist and composer Robert Jospe’s Inner Rhythm perform on the Hampton Campus of Thomas Nelson Community College on Sunday, February 19 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $12 for students and seniors and $15 for adults.
Jospé’s band Inner Rhythm is a high energy jazz and world-beat ensemble, performing original compositions rooted in jazz, Latin, Afro-Cuban and contemporary fusion styles, as well as jazz classics. Jospe’s recording career includes four albums. The latest of his CD’s, “Hands On,” released by Random Chance Records in 2004, reached #4 on the JazzWeek playlist and remained on the charts for 14 weeks. His last two CDs “Time To Play” and “Blue Blaze” received four stars in DownBeat Magazine and had top of the charts national radio play. “Hands On” features the same powerful group of musicians including Kevin Davis on percussion, Jeff Decker on saxophones, Bob Hallahan on piano, John D’earth on trumpet, Pete Spaar on bass, Royce Campbell on guitar and Elias Bailey on bass.
Jospé began his career in New York City. After attending New York University he became an active player in the New York jazz and rock scene for 15 years until he moved to Charlottesville, Va. A member of the University of Virginia’s music department’s performance faculty since 1989, Jospé teaches jazz drumming and is a member of UVA’s highly acclaimed faculty jazz ensemble, The Free Bridge Quintet. Some of the reviews of his latest album say:
“If “‘Hands On’” isn’t hands down the most appealing CD by percussionist Robert Jospe and Inner Rhythm, it’s still a winner by a good margin. ….the music is charged either with great spirit and drive or imbued with the kind of romantic lyricism that gets under your skin. Jospe deservedly gets top billing here, but he often defers to an impressive lineup…” Mike Joyce The Washington Post June 4, 2004
“Drummer Robert Jospe and Inner Rhythm turn in a spunky Latin jazz program with “Hands On.” Jospe’s septet projects a notable sense of depth throughout these largely, melodic works. Jospe is an adept timekeeper, thanks to his in-the-pocket grooves and energetic breaks with percussionist.” Kevin Davis DownBeat Magazine November 2004
