Robert B. Smith Scholarship
Robert B. Smith was admired and respected throughout the Peninsula community. To many, his name was synonymous with the Daily Press where he served as General Manager. He was formerly the Mayor of the City of Newport News. Mr. Smith was also a strong supporter of Thomas Nelson Community College where he was a charter member of the original TNCC Board established in 1967 and served as both Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Board during his 11 years of service. The Robert B. Smith Scholarship is awarded to a graduating high school senior who has excelled academically and has helped others through civic work and/or extracurricular activities.

Not to exceed $1,200

Semester(s) Awarded
Awarded in fall and divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. A GPA of 2.5 must be maintained in order to receive the award for the spring semester.

Requirements

  • Virginia resident;
  • Graduate of one of the public high schools in the TNCC service area, which includes the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York;
  • Minimum high school GPA of 2.5; and
  • Enrolled and maintain full-time student status.

In addition to standard Application Packet include

  • Letter of recommendation written by a teacher or guidance counselor.


The Louise H. Young Memorial Scholarship (Return to Top)
The Louise H. Young Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a graduating high school senior who has excelled academically and has helped others through civic work and/or extracurricular activities*.

Amount
Not to exceed $1,200; Two scholarships will be awarded in fall 2005.

Semester(s) Awarded
Awarded in fall and divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. A GPA of 2.5 must be maintained in order to receive the award for the spring semester.

Requirements

  • Virginia resident;
  • Graduate of one of the public high schools in the TNCC service area, which includes the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York;
  • Minimum high school GPA of 2.5; and
  • Enrolled and maintain full-time student status.

While not required, applicants will be given preference if they also include:

  • Letter of recommendation written by a teacher; and
  • Statement of nomination, usually written by the student’s guidance counselor, not to exceed two single-spaced typewritten pages which include:
    • A description of the ways in which academic excellence has been demonstrated, and
    • A description of extracurricular activities and/or civic work.

* Preference will be given to students who include a letter of recommendation from a teacher and a statement of nomination, preferably from a school guidance counselor.


Charles & Mary Hastings Memorial Scholarship (Return to Top)
Charles and Mary Hastings were long-time residents of the Peninsula and founded the Hastings Instrument Company in 1944, in Hampton. Charles was a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and Mary a graduate of the College of William and Mary. The Charles and Mary Hastings Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a graduating high school senior who has excelled academically and has helped others through civic work and/or extracurricular activities.

Amount
Not to exceed $1,000 per scholarship. Up to four available.

Semester(s) Awarded
Awarded in fall and divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. A GPA of 2.5 must be maintained in order to receive the award for the spring semester.

Requirements

  • Resident of the city of Hampton, Virginia;
  • Student must be in financial need under the same criteria for federal grant programs;
  • Minimum high school GPA of 2.5; and
  • Enrolled and maintain full-time student status.

In addition to standard Application Packet include

  • Letter of recommendation written by a teacher; and
  • Statement of nomination, usually written by the student’s guidance counselor, not to exceed two single-spaced typewritten pages which include:
    • A description of the ways in which academic excellence has been demonstrated, and
    • A description of extracurricular activities and/or civic work.


Presidential Scholar Scholarship (Return to Top)
The Thomas Nelson Community College Board established the Presidential Scholar Scholarship in 1997 to assist high achieving TNCC students.

$1,500

Awarded in fall and divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. A GPA of 3.5 must be maintained in order to receive the award for the spring semester.

Requirements

  • Enrolled and maintain full-time student status;
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5; and
  • Completed at least 30 semester hours at TNCC.


J. Edwin Treakle Foundation Scholarships (Return to Top)
The J. Edwin Treakle Foundation Scholarships were established in 1998 to help finance the education of students who are residents of the Gloucester/Mathews region. Priority consideration will be given to those students with a 3.0 GPA or higher who are not receiving other forms of financial aid, and who have not previously received a scholarship from The J. Edwin Treakle Foundation.

College Board Scholar Scholarship (Return to Top)
The Thomas Nelson Community College Board established the College Board Scholar Scholarship in 1997.

Awarded in fall and divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. For the scholarship to continue in the spring semester, the recipient must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5.

Requirements

  • Be registered as and maintain full-time student status at TNCC;
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5; and
  • Completed at least 30 semester hours at TNCC.


Irene Morgan Scholarship (Return to Top)
In honor of civil rights pioneer Irene Morgan, this TNCC President’s Scholarship was established in 2000.

$1,500

Awarded in fall and divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. A GPA of 3.0 must be maintained in order to receive the award for the spring semester.

Requirements

  • Enrolled as a full-time student;
  • Completed 15 semester hours at TNCC;
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0;
  • Candidate for an AA, AS, or AAS degree; and
  • Taken an active leadership role in improving their community

In addition to standard Application Packet include

  • An essay on how a citizen such as Irene Morgan can change a community.


George A. Orphanidys, Sr. Scholarship (Return to Top)
The George A. Orphanidys, Sr. Scholarship was established in 1996 by George and Edward Fiscella in memory of Mr. George A. Orphanidys, Sr.

Fall. Any remaining balance from the fall can be used in the spring if a GPA of 3.0 is maintained.

Requirements

  • Virginia resident
  • Completed at least 18 credits at TNCC; and
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.


Bob and Carla Templin Scholarship (Return to Top)
Dr. Robert “Bob” Templin was president of TNCC from 1986 to 1994. During his administration, he helped create nationally recognized programs
that increased overall college attendance and the attendance and success of minority students. Carla Templin worked to aid the international placement of children and arranged medical care for children with special needs. Her belief in changing the world one child at a time has been put into practice. Bob and Carla have raised 14 children, 11 of whom they adopted.

Phi Theta Kappa – Phi Sigma Chapter Scholarship (Return to Top)
This scholarship was established in 2009 to assist active members of Phi Theta Kappa.

Requirements

  • Be an active PTK member;
  • Participated in a minimum of three (3) events hosted by PTK during the previous academic year;
  • Enrolled in an AA, AS, or AAS degree program;
  • Demonstrated some capacity of involvement in a community outreach program; and
  • In lieu of the Foundation Scholarship application essay, applicants are required to submit an essay (250-500 maximum), describing how their involvement with Phi Theta Kappa has made them a better citizen at Thomas Nelson Community College, the local, regional, national and/or international level.

Northrop Grumman Newport News Commonwealth Legacy Scholar Scholarship

The Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship Program is designed to honor one scholar from each college. Funded by the Foundation for Community College Education, this scholarship is named each year for the recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy. When the program was first launched in 2006, the VFCCE awarded 40 scholarships (one scholar per campus) in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the VA Community College System.
