Chris L. Bowman Scholarship
Mr. Chris L. Bowman, a former TNCC Employee, established this Scholarship in 2007 to assist and dedicate financial help to a TNCC Plant Service Employee who is pursuing an academic degree program or a certification.

One (1) Scholarship will be awarded annually either fall or spring.

Requirements
Applicants for the Chris L. Bowman Scholarship must:

  • Be A TNCC Plant Services Employee;
  • Must be working towards a TNCC degree program or certification;
  • Minimum GPA of 2.0.

Sabrina Bryant Single Mother’s Memorial Fund
Established in 2004, the Sabrina Bryant Single Mother’s Memorial Fund is limited to TNCC students who are single parents pursing a degree program.

J. Frank Benson Memorial Scholarship
A resident of Hampton, Dr. James M. Benson served Teledyne-Hastings-Raydist in various ways over the years, including working as Vice President, Director of Research, and acting as a Consultant after his retirement. He was issued more than 15 U.S. and foreign patents and published many articles. Dr. Benson earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from East Tennessee State College and his master’s and Ph.D. in physics and mathematics from the University of Tennessee. Dr. Benson was active in the community, serving in the Peninsula Executives Club, the Peninsula Fine Arts Association, and Hampton Kiwanis Club. The J. Frank Benson Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Benson’s son, J. Frank Benson, and is awarded to a student who pursues academic excellence and community involvement.

Awarded in fall and divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. A GPA of 2.5 must be maintained in order to receive the award for the spring semester.

Requirements

  • Virginia resident;
  • Graduating senior of one of the public high schools in the TNCC service area, which includes the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York;
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5; and
  • Enrolled and maintain full-time student status. In addition to standard Application Packet include
  • Letter of recommendation written by a teacher; and
  • Statement of nomination, usually written by the student’s guidance counselor, not to exceed two single-spaced typewritten pages which include:
    • A description of the ways in which academic excellence has been demonstrated, and
    • A description of extracurricular activities and/or civic work.


The Louise H. Young Memorial Scholarship
The Louise H. Young Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a graduating high school senior who has excelled academically and has helped others through civic work and/or extracurricular activities*.

Amount
Not to exceed $1,200; Two scholarships will be awarded in fall 2005.

Awarded in fall and divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. A GPA of 2.5 must be maintained in order to receive the award for the spring semester.

Requirements

  • Virginia resident;
  • Graduate of one of the public high schools in the TNCC service area, which includes the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York;
  • Minimum high school GPA of 2.5; and
  • Enrolled and maintain full-time student status.

While not required, applicants will be given preference if they also include:

  • Letter of recommendation written by a teacher; and
  • Statement of nomination, usually written by the student’s guidance counselor, not to exceed two single-spaced typewritten pages which include:
    • A description of the ways in which academic excellence has been demonstrated, and
    • A description of extracurricular activities and/or civic work.

* Preference will be given to students who include a letter of recommendation from a teacher and a statement of nomination, preferably from a school guidance counselor.


Langley Federal Credit Union (LFCU) Scholarship
As a commitment to assist Langley Federal Credit Union members attending TNCC, the Langley Federal Credit Union (LFCU) established a scholarship in 1996.

Up to $1,000

Awarded in fall and divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. A GPA of 3.0 must be maintained in order to receive the award for the spring semester.

Requirements

  • First-year student starting in the fall semester immediately following high school graduation;
  • Statement of nomination from a high school teacher or counselor;
  • Enrolled and maintain full-time student status;
  • Minimum cumulative high school GPA of 3.0; and
  • Member of LFCU prior to application for scholarship.

In addition to standard Application Packet includes

  • Documentation of LFCU membership.


Rotary Club of the Virginia Peninsula Scholarship
The Rotary Club of the Virginia Peninsula Scholarship was established in 1997 to honor a student who has been recognized for performing community service on the Peninsula.

  • Cumulative high school GPA of 2.5 or better;
  • Received recognition for a community service deed on the Peninsula; and
  • Documentation of community service recognition must accompany the application.


Elizabeth Southall James Thompson Memorial Scholarship
The Elizabeth Southall James Thompson Memorial Scholarship was established in 2001 to recognize and reward students who are long-time Hampton Roads residents financing their own college education. Mrs. Thompson was a native of Hampton who dedicated her life to her family, business, and community. She worked for 27 years with one of the leading realty companies of the region and became one of its principle owners. Starting her own construction company in 1980, The Kicotan Company, she completed more than 200 homes and was recognized for her outstanding work by her peers and the industry.

Requirements

  • Have a financial aid form on file with TNCC’s Financial Aid office;
  • Ineligible for state or federal need based grants;
  • Enrolled in a degree program AA, AS or AAS degree;
  • Previously have graduated from one of the high schools in the TNCC service area
  • Minimum high school GPA of 2.5 if a new student; and
  • Minimum of 12 semester hours at TNCC with a minimum
  • cumulative GPA of 2.5 if a return student.


Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce (VPCC)
Military Affairs Council (MAC) Scholarship This scholarship was established in 1996 by the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce (VPCC) Military Affairs Council (MAC) as a commitment to families of military members stationed on the Virginia Peninsula.

Up to $1,000

Awarded in fall and divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. A GPA of 2.5 must be maintained in order to receive the award for the spring semester.

Requirements

  • New student;
  • Virginia resident;
  • Full-time student;
  • Minimum high school GPA of 3.0; and
  • Dependent of active duty service member assigned to a military activity located on the Virginia Peninsula; and
  • Documentation as to active duty station of the military member.


Angel & Rosa Espada Scholarship
Established in 1993, the Angel & Rosa Espada Scholarship is appropriate for both new and returning students. Priority consideration will be given first to students of Hispanic origin and then to single parents of any ethnic origin.

  • $500 for a full-time student
  • $250 for a part-time student

  • Have demonstrated financial need;

Virginia Peninsula Association of Realtors Scholarship
The Virginia Peninsula Association of Realtors established the Virginia Peninsula Association of Realtors Scholarship in 2005 to provide educational opportunities to those who students interested in the Real Estate Industry.

  • Be enrolled in the Real Estate Career Studies program at TNCC;
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5; and
  • Demonstarted financial need by receiving financial aid.

James Allison Memorial Scholarship
James Allison was a history professor and one of the original faculty members at TNCC. During much of the 1970s, Mr. Allison served as the Division Chair for Business Sciences. In the late 1970s, Mr. Allison returned to teaching history until he retired in 1988. The James Allison Memorial Scholarship was established in his memory in 1996.

L. Nelson Farley Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1997 to assist certain students who are nearing graduation. Preference given to students who previously participated in a state’s vocational rehabilitation program.

Amount
Varies depending on the availability of funds and the number of remaining classes a student requires to graduate.

Requirements

  • Preference given to previous participants of any vocational rehabilitation program;
  • Preference given to Virginia residents;
  • Student must be a part- or full-time student within two semesters of graduating;
  • Student must have a minimum GPA of 2.0; and
  • Student cannot be receiving financial aid.


John R. Lawson Scholarship
The First United Methodist Church of Hampton established this scholarship to honor John R. Lawson. Mr. Lawson served for 15 years on the Hampton City Council and 12 years on the Hampton Redevelopment and Housing Authority Board of Commissioners. He served on numerous other boards and was president of the Hampton Rotary Club. Individuals who have received assistance from the John R. Lawson fund for the past three years are not eligible to apply.

Hampton Roads Automobile Dealer’s Association (HRADA) Scholarship
The Hampton Roads Automobile Dealer’s Association (HRADA) Scholarship, established in 1995, is intended to pay tuition, fees, and books for selected students in TNCC’s Comprehensive Automotive Technology associate degree program. This scholarship is appropriate for both new and returning students.

Awarded in fall and divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. A GPA of 2.5 must be maintained in order to receive the award for all subsequent semesters.

Requirements

  • High school graduate with a GPA of 2.5 or better;
  • Virginia resident;
  • Possess a demonstrable automotive technology ability;
  • Have and maintain a good driving record when entering and while participating in the program;
  • Students who remain in good standing must work for a participating HRADA member starting the second year while attending classes on a part-time basis; and
  • Award recipients must agree to accept employment at a participating HRADA dealer (if offered) at the rate of one calendar year of employment for each academic year of financial assistance. In addition to standard Application Packet include
  • A copy of DMV driving record; and
  • A statement of nomination from a person involved in the automotive technology field who can attest to your knowledge, skills, and potential in this area.


The John Blair Haldeman Memorial Scholarship Fund
Mr. and Mrs. John H. Haldeman, Jr. established this Scholarship in 2007.

Amount
Up to $2,000 per award, up to $6,000 total. At least one award will be for a student in the Automotive Technology Program;

At least three (3) Scholarships will be awarded each semester

Requirements
Applicants for the John Blair Haldeman Memorial Scholarship must:

  • Be enrolled either full or part-time in the TNCC Automotive Technology program
  • May be enrolled either full or part-time in any curriculum program offered by TNCC
  • Must demonstrate serious commitment to continuing and completing higher education goals
  • Must be in good academic standing.
  • Must demonstrate financial need as determined by the Director of Scholarships; and
  • Scholarship may be renewed for second year so long as the student remains enrolled in the program.

Rodgers & Elizabeth Smith Scholarship Fund
Established in 2008, the Rodgers & Elizabeth Smith Scholarship Fund is designed to assist students who have resided in York County and graduated from a York County Public High School. Ms. Smith a native and lifelong resident of York County served on the Local College Board for Thomas Nelson Community College for eight years.

  • Have graduated from a York County Public High School;
  • Present high school transcripts (official or unofficial) as proof.

  • Students who are pursuing an academic degree program A.A., A.S., or A.A.S.
