Southern Association of Colleges and Universities Reaffirms Accreditation of Thomas Nelson Community College

Published: September 6, 2006

The Virginia Peninsula – The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) has reaffirmed the accreditation of Thomas Nelson Community College following a comprehensive assessment which started in early 2005. In a letter to Thomas Nelson Community College president, Dr. Charles A. Taylor, the President of the Commission on Colleges, Dr. Belle S. Wheelan wrote that it had voted to reaffirm the College’s status as an accredited institution.

“This is yet another great accomplishment for Thomas Nelson Community College, that would not have been possible without the exemplary teamwork across the entire college community,” said President Taylor. “I am very proud of the hard work the entire College community put into this process and we should all be proud of the results.”

Almost every department at Thomas Nelson was involved in the process of gathering data to document that the College is in compliance with SACS core requirements and comprehensive standards. The College submitted an initial report that was studied by an off-site review committee in March, 2005. In preparation for an on-site visit, which took place last October, the College submitted a focused report responding to questions and comments from the off-site team. This submission also included a final version of the College’s Quality Enhancement Plan. The College’s Quality Enhancement Plan, entitled “Engagement by Design: Promoting a Culture of Learning at Thomas Nelson Community College”, involves the commitment and participation of all aspects of the college community – students, staff, faculty and administrators, working together to implement communities of learning that include developing a support system for high courses. The ultimate goal of the program is to improve student learning and enhance the rates of success of our students.

“There is always some level of stress associated with going through an accreditation process but we were confident that Thomas Nelson would be reaffirmed because it is a solid and stable institution of higher education,” said Dr. Richard Fleming, Vice President of Academic Affairs, “The discussions generated during the site team visit and the information compiled as we prepared for the off-site review will be used to continue to enhance the services we provide to our students and the communities we serve.”

The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools is the recognized regional accrediting body in the eleven U.S. Southern states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia) and in Latin America for those institutions of higher education that award associate, baccalaureate, master’s or doctoral degrees. The Commission on Colleges is the representative body of the College Delegate Assembly and is charged with carrying out the accreditation process.
