Course Description and Pre-requisites
ASL 101 American Sign Language I
(3 credits) ASL 101/102 must be taken in sequence. Prerequisite(s): ENF 1 or ENF 2 as demonstrated through the placement and diagnostics tests or equivalent. Introduces the fundamentals of American Sign Language (ASL) used by the Deaf Community, including basic vocabulary, syntax, fingerspelling, and grammatical non-manual signals. Focuses on communicative competence. Develops gestural skills as a foundation for ASL enhancement. Introduces cultural knowledge and increases understanding of the Deaf Community. Lecture 3 hours per week.
ASL 102 American Sign Language II
(3 credits) ASL 101/102 must be taken in sequence. Prerequisite(s): ASL 101 (SCM 100). Introduces the fundamentals of American Sign Language (ASL) used by the Deaf Community, including basic vocabulary, syntax, fingerspelling, and grammatical non-manual signals. Focuses on communicative competence. Develops gestural skills as a foundation for ASL enhancement. Introduces cultural knowledge and increases understanding of the Deaf Community. Lecture 3 hours per week.
ASL 115 Finger Spelling & Number Use in ASL
(2 credits) Prerequisite(s): ASL 101 (SCM 100) or permission of instructor. Provides intensive practice in comprehension and production of fingerspelled words and numbers with emphasis on clarity and accuracy. Focuses on lexicalized fingerspelling and numeral incorporation as used by native users of American Sign Language. Lecture 2 hours per week.
ASL 125 History & Culture of the Deaf Community I
(3 credits) Presents an overview of various aspects of Deaf Culture, including educational and legal issues. Lecture 3 hours per week.
ASL 201 American Sign Language III
(3 credits) Prerequisite(s): ASL 102 (SCM 110). Develops vocabulary, conversational competence, and grammatical knowledge with a total immersion approach. Introduces increasingly complex grammatical aspects including those unique to ASL. Discusses culture and literature. Contact with the Deaf Community is encouraged to enhance linguistic and cultural knowledge. Lecture 3 hours + lab 1 hour = 4 hours per week.
ASL 220 Comparative Linguistics: ASL & English
(3 credits) Prerequisite(s): ASL 201. Describes spoken English and ASL (American Sign Language) on five levels: phonological, morphological, lexical, syntactic, and discourse. Compares and contrasts the two languages on all five levels using real-world examples. Documents similarities between signed languages and spoken languages in general. Describes the major linquistic components and processes of English and ASL. Introduces basic theories regarding ASL structure. Emphasizes ASL's status as a natural language by comparing and contrasting similarities and unique differences between the two languages. Lecture 3 hours per week.
