Thomas Nelson opened my academic doors. I got to learn and adjust to American culture at Thomas Nelson. I’ve also made connections, which I hope will help me wherever I will go in my life.

Pascal Shukuru is a Valley Proteins Fellow. Shukuru, an Engineering major, is a native of the Democratic Republic of Congo and immigrated to the United States. He wanted to pursue higher education but faced roadblocks without a diploma from a U.S. high school. He discovered that Thomas Nelson was the best choice for him. He credits the College’s TRiO program for helping. “[Thomas Nelson] opened my academic doors. I got to learn and adjust to American culture at [Thomas Nelson]. I’ve also made connections, which I hope will help me wherever I will go in my life,” Shukuru said.

Shukuru balances his academic load with his job as a work-study student. He’s also a member of the International Club. After completing an Associate Degree at Thomas Nelson, he plans to study Biomedical Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University. His long-term goals include completing medical school and returning to Africa to open clinics and hospitals in rural areas
