More than 16,300 students enrolled at Thomas Nelson Community College in 2010-2011, a 2.9 percent increase and a record high for the institution. The number of full-time students also jumped, with 9 percent more taking at least 30 academic hours. That’s about 600 more, for a total of 7,179.
TNCC is fourth for growth in full-time student enrollment among Virginia’s 23 community colleges. The local increase follows a nationwide trend of enrollment spikes at community colleges as tuition rises at state and public universities. Enrollment at TNCC climbed by 7.4 percent in 2006-2007; college officials say that’s when large numbers of first-time college students sought affordable higher education.
