Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) Financial Aid Director Kathryn Anderson has announced that the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is accepting applications for 2012-13 Visual Arts Fellowships. The deadline to apply is Thursday, November 10.

TNCC Computer Arts Students Present Portfolio Exhibit

Eleven Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) Computer Arts students will present their work in “Keyframed.” Free and open to the public, the portfolio exhibit will be held Tuesday, Oct. 13 from 4 to 7 p.m. in Templin Hall on the Hampton campus. This is the sixth year for the exhibit. “The show is vital to students because they are presenting their work publicly for the first time,” said Cecilia Wheeler, Associate Professor of Art and Computer Arts Department Head at TNCC.

The show is part of ART 193: Studies in Art, an elective course that allows students to concentrate on developing a professional portfolio. “The portfolios are multimedia files so they include advanced motion graphics, using our new green screen studio and the industry-standard software we teach. In addition, the students created their own DVD with the DVD authoring software as well as other promotional materials, business cards and promo packets,” Wheeler said.

Comedic Play ‘Pirates of the Chemotherapy’ Comes to TNCC Oct. 23-25

Iron Street Productions brings the play “Pirates of the Chemotherapy” to the stage at Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium, Templin Hall, Hampton campus. Performances begin at 8 p.m. on Oct. 23 and 24, and the final show on Oct. 25 starts at 3 p.m.

In this original dramatic comedy written by Paul Schutte and directed by Brandon Lyles, six breast cancer survivors portrayed by local actresses unite to take on more than just their cancer and the disease’s side effects. They band together to take on life, and in the process they find new meaning for their lives through love and laughter. The women even refer to themselves as pirates and don pirates’ attire complete with scarves and eye patches.

British Photographer to Lecture At TNCC Oct. 29

Thomas Nelson Community College’s Cultural Affairs in partnership with the Mariners’ Museum brings British photographer Andy Hughes to the Hampton campus this month for an informative lecture about his craft. Free and open to the public the presentation called “An Evening with Andy Hughes” comes to the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium, Templin Hall, Thursday October 29 at 7:00 p.m.

Hughes’ work reflects a concern with the ocean, beach and environmental issues. See some of his breathtaking photographs in an exhibit called “Message in a Bottle/Dominant Wave Theory” now showing through January 2010 at the Mariners’ Museum in Newport News. The exhibit also features works by photographer Chris Jordan.

TNCC Faculty Member Honored by Region’s Cultural Arts Community

Thomas Nelson Community College faculty member Shar Wolff has received the Bettie Minette Cooper Arts Educator Award.  The photography department head was acknowledged on Nov. 9 among honorees at the 2008 Alli Awards at the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.

Presented annually by the Cultural Alliance of Greater Hampton Roads, the Alli Awards celebrate contributions in the past year to the local arts community by individuals, businesses and the media.

TNCC Art Exhibit Features Multimedia Works by Students

A multimedia exhibition of individual art portfolios by Thomas Nelson Community College students entitled Play will be featured in Templin Hall (Hampton campus) on Friday, Oct. 24 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.  Refreshments will be served.

The exhibit features the digital portfolios of graduating students Zach Bealer, Michelle Folts, Karen Price, Joe Reedy, Kira Shird and Brittanie Thompson.
