TNCC Receives $35,000 Grant for Solar-Powered Gazebo

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) has received a $35,000 grant from Dominion Virginia Power and The Dominion Foundation for a student-led project to build a solar-powered gazebo on the Hampton campus. Called GreenZebo, the project aims to educate students about alternative energy by demonstrating the efficiency and reliability of a solar powered application. The Honorable Melanie Rapp Beale, a former Virginia delegate and current External Affairs Manager for Dominion Virginia Power’s Eastern Region, presented a check to the TNCC Educational Foundation on Thursday, September 13.

The company and its charitable arm awarded roughly $1 million in higher educational partnership grants for the 2012-2013 academic year throughout Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia and in targeted localities in New England, Maryland and North Carolina. Thomas Nelson is among institutions across Virginia to receive grants ranging from $1,000 to $45,000 to support projects in energy, environment and workforce development.  Patricia Taylor, TNCC’s Dean of Science, Engineering and Technology, expressed appreciation. “We are very grateful for Dominion’s support of the College’s initiatives. This is really great for our students and our efforts to educate them about the importance of being energy conscious,” she said.

TNCC Receives Environmental Design Certification for Recent Renovation

Thomas Nelson Community College received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Renovation Certification for its recent renovation of the Hampton III building. LEED certification indicates that a structure was built with special attention to human and environmental health with concentration in several areas, including sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. TNCC is the first within Virginia’s Community Colleges (VCCS) to earn the certification, and the College exceeded the rating system’s requirements. . “It shows that we care about saving energy and environmental concerns,” said Mark Kramer, TNCC Director of Facilities, Planning and Capital Outlay.

TNCC Awarded $40,000 Grant for Greenhouse Renovation

Thomas Nelson Community College has been awarded a $40,000 grant from Dominion Resources to renovate its existing greenhouse on the Hampton campus. Located on the Hastings Hall roof, the greenhouse will benefit students in Biology, Electronics Engineering Technology and Electrical Technology programs. TNCC expects the renovation to be complete by late spring.

“The College is always striving to stay on the forefront of the newest technology in the industry and with the quick rise of the focus on alternative energy, we felt compelled to get involved,” said Tom Pringle, TNCC Instructor and Program Head of Computer-Aided Drafting and Design.

In fall 2011, TNCC students were asked to assess the needs of Biology faculty, gather information from vendors and formulate a design for the project, which includes the installation of six solar panels on the greenhouse’s roof and a new interior lighting system that will allow students to grow and cultivate plants twice during the semester. TNCC Student Elected to State Office for Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) student Jerry Van Harris has been elected to serve as a Regional President for Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society representing Virginia. A member of PTK’s Phi Sigma chapter at TNCC, Harris was installed in March during the organization’s regional convention in Roanoke, Virginia and will be officially recognized during its 94th International Convention in Nashville, Tennessee April 12-14. He has also been designated as the official flag bearer representing Virginia during the convention’s opening ceremony.

Harris will serve one year as a regional president. “I was honored and surprised that [PTK peers] thought I would be a good regional president. I want to represent the chapter and Thomas Nelson well while in the position. I hope to promote education, whether it’s for personal or professional purposes, as an asset to everyone’s life. Learning is a lifelong experience,” he said.

TNCC Awarded $40,000 Grant for Greenhouse Renovation

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) has been awarded a $40,000 grant from Dominion Resources to install a green roof on its existing greenhouse on the Hampton campus. TNCC’s Electronics students will gain hands-on experience while installing solar panels in the facility. The College’s Biology students will plan projects that involve use of the space.

Dominion Resources, which comprises Dominion Virginia Power, awarded more than $1 million dollars in grants to community colleges and four-year institutions statewide to support programs in business, skilled craft, engineering, environmental and technical studies. Funding also supports student-led conversation programs. Old Dominion University and Hampton University were also among the recipients in Hampton Roads.

TNCC Student Named Among Community College Legacy Scholars Statewide

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) student Christopher Duke was among students statewide chosen as 2011 Commonwealth Legacy Scholars. Representing Virginia’s 23 community colleges, Commonwealth Legacy Scholars received scholarships of up to $3,500 for the 2011-2012 school year. The students were honored during a Virginia Foundation for Community College Education (VFCCE) luncheon in Charlottesville in mid-November.

“These outstanding students are Virginia’s future leaders. They represent the potential in all of our youth, and the difference that we each can make in the world,” said Glenn DuBois, Chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges (VCCS).
