TNCC Honored Local Citizens During 43rd Commencement

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) presented the Thomas Nelson Medallion, Dana B. Hamel Award and Distinguished Alumni Award during its 43rd commencement ceremony on Wednesday, May 16 at the Hampton University Convocation Center. The awards honor citizens who champion higher education and public service.

The Thomas Nelson Medallion honors citizens who exemplify the spirit and highest ideals of Thomas Nelson – patriot, soldier-statesman and governor. This year’s recipient is the Honorable Melanie Rapp Beale, a former Virginia delegate and past president of the TNCC Educational Foundation.

Thomas Nelson Community College will present several special awards during its 42nd commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 14 to honor citizens who champion higher education and public service. The 10:00 a.m. ceremony takes place at the Hampton University Convocation Center with presentation of the Thomas Nelson Medallion, Dana B. Hamel Award the annual Distinguished Alumni Award and an Honorary Associate of Humane Letters Degree by TNCC President Alvin J. Schexnider.

TNCC Biology Professor Studies Rare Fish in Japan

Thomas Nelson Community College’s Jennifer Martin studies rare fish, but merely reading about them is not enough. The Assistant Professor of Biology goes where the fish are. Her latest investigation involves intense field research in Japan to gather information to complete a Doctoral degree in Marine Science at William & Mary’s Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS). Martin embarked on the month-long excursion on January 5 and the itinerary includes stops in Tokyo, Sapporo, Kyoto, Kanagawa, Chiba, and several coastal fishing villages.

“My research program centers on marine fishes and their environments, integrating questions pertaining to biology, ecology, genetics and oceanography. More specifically, the focus of my dissertation is on the systematics and evolution of the Lampridiform fishes, the oarfishes and their relatives, from the Indo-West Pacific Ocean,” Martin said.

TNCC Instructor Joins Committee to Create Professional Organization for Geoscience Educators

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) adjunct Geology instructor Lynsey LeMay is among 10 geoscience educators on an committee to establish a professional organization for geoscience instructors at two-year colleges. The new organization will be affiliated with the National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT), a group created to enhance formal and informal earth science education for K-12 students and students at colleges and universities.

The group will provide special support for geoscience faculty at two-year colleges, promote opportunities to expand professional development, and build an online portal for 2YC geoscience educators. Additionally, it will establish best practices for geoscience education at two-year colleges and develop programs that will improve student learning and retention for diverse populations.

TNCC Names Former Williamsburg Mayor Jeanne Zeidler as its Fifth Presidential Leadership Award Recipient

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) has selected the Honorable Jeanne Zeidler, former Mayor of Williamsburg, to receive its Fifth Annual Presidential Leadership Award. As part of TNCC’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day observances, the award presentation is set for 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 11 at the Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg.

The College established its Presidential Leadership Award to honor the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by recognizing an outstanding community leader and important role model for students.

Del. Robin Abbott is Guest Speaker for TNCC’s Honor Society Induction

Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Phi Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society will host its fall 2010 induction on Friday, October 1. Free and open to the public, the ceremony takes place at 7 p.m. in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium, Templin Hall, located on the Hampton campus.

Virginia Delegate Robin Abbott, a 1997 TNCC graduate and Phi Theta Kappa member, will be the keynote speaker. Representing the 93rd district, Del. Abbott is a consumer advocate and attorney who has lived in Newport News for more than two decades. She is a partner in the law firm Consumer Litigation Associates, P.C. with offices in Newport News and Fairfax. Del. Abbott was awarded TNCC’s Dana B. Hamel Award this year for her support of community college education.
