Two TNCC Students to Receive High Academic Honors at May 15 Commencement

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) named graduating students Jonathan Westley Hicks and Amanda Renfroe as recipients of the 2009-2010 President‘s and Vice President’s Awards, respectively. The College presents the awards during commencement each spring in acknowledgment of students’ exceptional academic performance. Both recipients are graduating summa cum laude with 4.0 grade point averages.

Hicks and Renfroe are among nearly 1,000 students who have applied to graduate during the 2009-2010 academic year. This figure includes students who completed their curriculum requirements in summer 2009, fall 2009, and those who have applied for graduation in spring 2010. Graduating students will receive certificates, career studies certificates, or a combination of these academic credentials. Criteria for the President’s and Vice President’s awards include attaining the highest cumulative grade point average, completing at least 60 semester hours of course work and receiving an Associate’s Degree for the current year, among other criteria.

TNCC to Recognize Local, State Leaders During May 15 Commencement

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will recognize several government officials and community members for their contributions in education and public service during its 41st commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 15 at 10:00 a.m. at the Hampton University Convocation Center. TNCC President Alvin J. Schexnider will present several new awards, including the Thomas Nelson Medallion and the Dana B. Hamel Award. The President will also present an Honorary Associate Degree to a local business/industry leader and the annual Distinguished Alumni Award.

TNCC is site of FBLA’s Spring Competition

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will host the Future Business Leaders of America’s (FBLA) Spring Competition on Saturday, March 6 at 9 a.m. at the Espada Conference Center, Hampton campus. The event is a gathering for high school students who are members of the organization at Virginia Peninsula schools. FBLA is a national organization that focuses on several areas of student development including business knowledge and skills; school and community service; leadership and promotion, and financial and social awareness.

William Travis, TNCC’s Historic Triangle campus provost and regional director of FBLA’s Thomas Nelson region, said judges from TNCC will evaluate students in several competitions taking place before the March 6 event including:

The College presents the awards during commencement each spring in acknowledgment of students’ exceptional academic performance. Both recipients are graduating summa cum laude with 4.0 grade point averages.

Criteria for the awards include attaining the highest cumulative grade point average (GPA), completing at least 60 semester hours of course work and receiving an Associate’s Degree for the current year, among other criteria.

The deadline to submit nominations for TNCC Distinguished Alumni Awards has been extended to Wednesday, January 14, 2009. The nomination form is available at the following link: Distinguished Alumni Nomination Form (pdf)

The TNCC Distinguished Alumni Awards were established in 2008. The awards recognize TNCC alumni who are making outstanding contributions to society through professional achievements and community service.

Virginia’s Community Colleges Served Over a Third of Bachelor’s Degree Earners Last Year

  • More than one-third of college graduates in Virginia had attended a Virginia Community College
  • 27 percent completed an associate’s degree before going on to obtain their bachelor’s degree.
  • Nearly 60 percent of students co-enroll or go back and forth between two- and four-year institutions.

More than one third of those who graduated with a four-year degree in 2008 in Virginia got their start at- or supplemented their college experience with courses from- Virginia’s Community Colleges.
