TNCC Names President and Vice-President Award Winners for 2007-08 Graduating Class

Thomas Nelson Community College has named the following graduating students as the recipients of the President and Vice-President Awards for the 2007-2008 graduating class: Valerie Murray Link and Amanda Leigh Collier.

Valerie Murray Link is the recipient of the President’s Award for this year’s graduating class. Link is being recognized for her academic achievements during the pursuit of an Associate of Science degree in Business. She is graduating Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 grade point average (GPA). She is currently employed by Swiss Log as a Quality Manager. This fall, she will continue her education at Old Dominion University where she will pursue a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration/ Information Systems Technology.

TNCC’s Public Relations Office Garners 11 National/State Awards

Thomas Nelson Community College’s Office of Public Relations, Marketing, and Special Events won 11 state and national awards for its 2006-2007 multimedia promotional campaign bringing the department’s total awards to 26 in the last two years. The department submitted 28 entries for consideration to several professional organizations that rate public relations material in the higher education arena.

“Supporting the mission of Thomas Nelson Community College through creative and innovative multimedia material to effectively reach a broad audience is what truly drives our team,” said the College’s Public Relations Director Cecilia Ramirez. “We always strive to produce quality material because this is essential to strategically positioning TNCC and our brand in the College’s service area,” she added.

TNCC’s Phi Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Receives Awards at Annual Virginia Conference

The Thomas Nelson Community College Phi Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the International Honor Society of two-year colleges has won the following awards during the 29th. Annual Virginia Regional Conference held in Richmond February 29 through March 2:

  • A Most Distinguished Chapter
  • 5-Star Chapter
  • 3rd Place Service Hallmark
  • 8th Place Scholarship Hallmark
  • Hall of Honor (Students): Jolene Nemec, Megan Kibitlewski and Ashley Wiggins

Thomas Nelson Community College has named the following graduating students as the recipients of the President and Vice-President Awards for the 2006-2007 graduating class: Cynthia Ann Catlett and Kristine ‘Kit’ Brady Rodriguez.

Cynthia Ann Catlett is the recipient of the President’s Award for this year’s graduating class. Catlett is being recognized for her academic achievements during the pursuit of an Associate of Applied Science degree in Information Technology/Microcomputer Applications. She is graduating Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 grade point average (GPA). Catlett is employed as a Fiscal Technician with the Department of Juvenile Justice. She plans to continue her education to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Her ultimate goal is to secure a management position with a local government agency.

Thomas Nelson Students Named to All-Virginia Academic Team

 Thomas Nelson Community College students Kristine “Kit” Brady Rodriguez and Qian Yi “Sandy” Lau Li have been named to the 2007 All-Virginia Academic Team. Selection is based on the nominations submitted by two-year colleges for the All-USA Academic Team, an international competition co-sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, USA TODAY and the American Association of Community Colleges.

Rodriguez, who has been a student at Thomas Nelson Community College since 2004, will be graduating this semester with an Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts with a 4.0 grade point average or GPA. In the fall, she will transfer to the College of William & Mary to pursue a bachelor’s degree in English. Rodriguez has been a member of Phi Theta Kappa since December 2005 and has served this organization as treasurer and as co-chair of the Honors Committee. She has also been a participant in the Regional Honors Institute. Rodriguez has been actively involved with the Nelsonite, the College’s student newspaper, as the features editor and staff writer.

Advanced Academic Degrees Granted to Three Thomas Nelson Community College Educators

THE VIRGINIA PENINSULA – Three Thomas Nelson Community College educators have been granted advanced academic degrees. They are: Sharon J. Cotman, Professor of Information Systems Technology, received her Education Specialist degree (Ed.S.) in Higher Education Administration from George Washington University. Cotman is a Thomas Nelson alumna and joined the College as a faculty member in 1984. Cotman is a resident of York County.

Timothy G. Wiedman, Associate Professor of Business Management, received his Doctor of Business Administration (D.B.A.) degree from Argosy University of Sarasota, Fla., effective March 31, 2006. Wiedman majored in Management, and his doctoral dissertation was entitled: “The Relationship between Industrial Safety and Profitability: Developing an Empirical Model.” Wiedman is Assistant Dean/Team Leader for the Business, Management/Marketing and Accounting programs, and was recently elected as First Vice President of the Thomas Nelson Community College Faculty Senate. He has been a faculty member at Thomas Nelson since 1992. Wiedman is a resident of Hampton.
