Spring break in the Caribbean and Pacific – it’s not as relaxing as it sounds. Eleven Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) Biology students traded a relaxing spring break for intensive field research in Costa Rica and Nicaragua February 25 – March 8. The trip was part of BIO 295: Topics in Biology: Tropical Ecosystem Ecology.

TNCC Biology Professor Awarded by VCCS for Teaching Excellence

Thomas Nelson Community College’s Martin D. Zahn, associate professor of Biology has received the 2008 Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence.  Virginia Community College System (VCCS) Chancellor Glenn DuBois presented the award during the State Board Annual meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008 in Richmond, Va.

The prestigious award is given annually to one faculty member in the VCCS “who distinctly represents the teaching excellence found at VCCS colleges.” The VCCS accepted only one nomination per campus for the award. As this year’s honoree, Mr. Zahn received a VCCS stole and $5,000.

TNCC Students to Spend Spring Break Doing Biological Research in Nicaragua

A trip to Nicaragua this spring will give nine Thomas Nelson Community College students enrolled in Bio 295: Tropical Ecology and Conservation in Nicaragua the opportunity to get their feet wet via hands-on biological research on the organisms, habitats and conservation of this country’s tropical ecosystems.

During the 10-day research trip scheduled during the College’s Spring Break, Feb. 28 – March 10, students will be conducting research projects at Ometepe Biological Teaching Station, which lies in Lake Nicaragua on Ometepe Island, the largest fresh water volcanic island in the world. While at Ometepe, the students will ascend the Maderas Volcano to observe biodiversity changes along an altitudinal gradient (dry forest, wet cloud forest, and elfin forest) and later descend into the crater lake.

Thomas Nelson Community College to Offer Interdisciplinary Course with Study Abroad Experience

Beginning in the spring semester, Thomas Nelson Community College students will have the opportunity to enrich and change their lives through an interdisciplinary course that offers a study abroad experience in Costa Rica. Students interested in participating in this course can enroll under any one of the following course designations:

  • HUM 295.01H: Topics in Humanities:  Costa Rican Culture, Language and Ecology
  • BIO 295.01H:  Topics in Biology:  Costa Rican Culture, Language and Ecology
  • SPA 295.01H:  Topics in Spanish:  Costa Rican Culture, Language and Ecology

Students who register in one of the above courses will be placed into a Community of Learning course that contains three interrelated components: Biology, Humanities and Spanish. This four-credit course is transferable and could apply toward an elective requirement.
