TNCC Opens Black History Month Observance with Newport News Mayor as Keynote Speaker

HAMPTON, Va. – Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) begins its Black History Month observance on Tuesday, February 1 with an opening ceremony featuring Newport News Mayor the Honorable Dr. McKinley L. Price as keynote speaker. Free and open to the public, this kick-off event takes place from 7-9 p.m. in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium located in Templin Hall on the Hampton campus.

The program will also include a musical performance by Legacy of Weyanoke and an exhibit of photographs taken in Africa by local photographer Nadere Johnson. Refreshments will be served.

Themed “On the Shoulders of Giants: Agents of Change,” the month-long celebrate begins Tuesday, February 1, 2011. All events will take place at the Hampton campus.

What would life be like without products invented by Africans and African Americans? Find out when Pin Points Theatre brings its production “1001 Inventions” to Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium, Templin Hall, Hampton campus.

Open to the public, the free event is sponsored by TNCC Cultural Affairs and is among a slate of activities in the College’s observance of Black History Month.

Thomas Nelson Community College will celebrate Black History Month with the special documentary presentation of The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till, a panel discussion of Their Eyes were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston and a special event sponsored by the College’s African-American Culture Club.
