Thomas Nelson Community College Holds Commencement Ceremony

Thomas Nelson Community College will celebrate its thirty-eighth Annual Commencement Ceremony at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15 at the Hampton Coliseum. More than 1,000 students have applied to graduate during the 2006-2007 academic year. This number includes students who completed their curriculum requirements in the summer 2006, fall 2006 and those who have applied for graduation in spring 2007. Graduating students will receive associate degrees, career studies certificates and diplomas. Some of the graduating students will receive more than one degree or a combination of degree, career studies certificate and/or diploma.

As part of the commencement exercises, Dr. Thomas R. Morris, Secretary of Education for the Commonwealth of Virginia will address the graduating class. In addition, the colors will be presented by the Bethel High School JROTC, and music will be provided by the York River Concert Band. Commencement is not a mandatory function but officials at Thomas Nelson Community College expect approximately 550 graduate candidates to participate in the ceremony.

Thomas Nelson Community College will break ground on a three-story, 120,000 square foot building for its permanent campus in the Historic Triangle on Wednesday, March 28 at 1:30 p.m. The ceremony will take place at the new campus site located in the Lightfoot area near the intersection of Route 60 and Centerville Road, adjacent to the newest high school in the Williamsburg-James City County school division . The Historic Triangle campus is funded by $17.6M from the General Obligation Bond for Higher Education passed by Virginia voters in November 2002 and $8.5M state funding passed by Virginia legislators in 2006.

The featured speaker at the Groundbreaking Ceremony is Virginia Secretary of Education, Dr. Thomas R. Morris. Joining him to celebrate this milestone for the College and the residents of Williamsburg, James City and upper York County are Dr. Glenn DuBois, chancellor of the Virginia Community College System, Virginia Senator Tommy Norment, Virginia delegates, Melanie Rapp, William Barlow and Phil Hamilton and representatives from the localities. Business and education leaders as well as the College’s faculty, staff and students have also been invited to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony.

Thomas Nelson Community College to Break Ground on New Historic Triangle Campus

A groundbreaking ceremony will take place Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. to celebrate the upcoming construction of Thomas Nelson Community College’s new Historic Triangle Campus. The new campus site is located in the Lightfoot area of James City County, near the intersection of Route 60 and Centerville Road.

The new campus will be built on 73.46 acres of land on the Warhill site, which was offered by James City County to the Commonwealth of Virginia for the purpose of building a campus for the College. Strategically located next to the Williamsburg-James City County (W-JCC) new Warhill high school, the College will work in collaboration with the W-JCC school system to develop programs and other opportunities that will facilitate the transition of high school students to college. The new campus will also play a major role in serving the workforce development needs of the business community and in assisting individual citizens achieve their educational goals.

Based on a projected enrollment of nearly 7,000 students, the master site plans includes state-of-the-art educational facilities that will be housed in five buildings for academic, administrative, student and faculty support and a Physical Plant facility. Surface parking lots and parking decks are also included in the plan. The first phase of construction will be a 120,000 square foot building slated to be completed by December 2008.

The Historic Triangle campus is the only new campus being built in the Virginia Community College System. The master site plan, designed by Moseley Architects of Virginia Beach has been approved by the State Board for Community Colleges.

Thomas Nelson Community College to Graduate Largest Class in College’s History

THE VIRGINIA PENINSULA — Thomas Nelson Community College will be graduating 1,011 students at its commencement ceremony to be held at the Hampton Coliseum today, Wednesday, May 17 at 7:00 p.m. This is the largest graduating class in the College’s history. The 2005-06 class is also receiving the greatest number of awards granted since the College first opened its doors in 1968. There are 1,396 awards eligible to be presented at this ceremony. This includes associate degrees, career certificates and diplomas, and includes students who completed their curriculum requirements in the summer session of 2005, fall semester 2005 or spring semester 2006. Some students will receive more than one degree or a combination of degree, career certificate or diploma.

As part of the commencement exercises, award-winning journalist and host of WHRO’s HearSay, Cathy Lewis will address the graduating class.

The Virginia Peninsula — On Thursday, February 9, thirty-two U.S. Navy sailors will graduate from the Medical Laboratory Technician Program at Thomas Nelson Community College. The ceremony will take place at 8:30 a.m. at the Mary T. Christian Auditorium on the TNCC Hampton Campus. The keynote speaker will be Captain Thomas E. McGue, Deputy Commander, Naval Medical Education and Training Command.

Inauguration Ceremony for TNCC President Set for October 14

The inauguration of Dr. Charles A. Taylor as the sixth president of Thomas Nelson Community College will take place at the Hampton Roads Convention Center in Hampton at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 14. The inaugural address will be given by Dr. Belle Wheelan, President of the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Dr. McKinley Price, Chair of the TNCC Local College Board will serve as the Master of Ceremonies. Several educational and community leaders will also be making remarks at the ceremony. A reception is being planned immediately after the inaugural ceremony.

At 8:30 a.m. on the same day, Dr. Charles A. Taylor will be joining TNCC students at a Student Leadership Breakfast. The breakfast will be held in the Espada Conference Center on the TNCC Hampton Campus. Other student events planned during the week in celebration of the inauguration include a student scholarship reception and a traveling Hispanic Heritage Cinema Exhibit.
