John T. Dever Selected to Become the Next President of Thomas Nelson Community College

Glenn DuBois, chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges (VCCS) announced today that Dr. John T. Dever will become the president of Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) at the beginning of October.

Dever’s career as a community college educator began in the English department of Thomas Nelson in 1975. He has worked at Blue Ridge Community College and Tidewater Community College. He is currently the Executive Vice President of Academic and Student Services at Northern Virginia Community College.

“John Dever began his career at Thomas Nelson Community College with a lot of energy, excitement and engagement in the college’s campus life,” said DuBois. “Returning to Thomas Nelson, as the college’s new president, completes the circle for this hard-working and deeply respected community college leader. I’m excited for both John and the college.”

TNCC Biology Professor Awarded by VCCS for Teaching Excellence

Thomas Nelson Community College’s Martin D. Zahn, associate professor of Biology has received the 2008 Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence.  Virginia Community College System (VCCS) Chancellor Glenn DuBois presented the award during the State Board Annual meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008 in Richmond, Va.

The prestigious award is given annually to one faculty member in the VCCS “who distinctly represents the teaching excellence found at VCCS colleges.” The VCCS accepted only one nomination per campus for the award. As this year’s honoree, Mr. Zahn received a VCCS stole and $5,000.

TNCC Student Named Among VCCS ‘Legacy Scholars’ Across Virginia

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) student William F. Zorn was among 30 students honored as Commonwealth Legacy Scholars. The honorees representing Virginia’s 23 community colleges were acknowledged in October during a luncheon in Richmond.

The scholarships recognize students from across the Commonwealth who demonstrated academic excellence during high school as well as a commitment to developing their leadership skills. They will become mentors to future Legacy Scholars as they move through their academic programs and graduate from a Virginia community college, according to Dr. Glenn DuBois, Chancellor of the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).

Experienced Higher Education Leader Named Interim President of Thomas Nelson Community College

Glenn DuBois, chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges announced today that Dr. Alvin J. Schexnider will become the interim president of Thomas Nelson Community College at the beginning of October. “I have known and worked with Alvin Schexnider for seven years,” said DuBois.  “Simply put, he is an outstanding leader.”

With more than thirty years of experience in higher education, Schexnider has served as a faculty member and senior executive more than half a dozen institutions, including two in the commonwealth: Virginia Commonwealth University and Norfolk State University.

Spotlight: Christy Hawkins Receives VCCS Chancellor’s Faculty Fellowship

Christy Hawkins, Assistant Professor of Health at Thomas Nelson Community College, was awarded the VCCS Chancellor’s Faculty Fellowship to pursue her doctorate of philosophy degree in education at Old Dominion University. The fellowship provides up to a one-year leave of absence, with shared financial support, for doctoral study at accredited institutions of higher education. While on leave, Hawkins will complete her final course requirements, comprehensive exams, and defend her dissertation proposal. Hawkins plans to evaluate predictors for success in online learning in her doctoral research. She will return to teaching after spring break for the second eight-week session of the spring semester.

The VCCS Chancellor’s Faculty Fellowship is awarded annually to no more than three outstanding faculty members in the VCCS. According to the website, “The purpose of the Chancellor’s Faculty Fellowship is to ensure that capable people within the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) have opportunities to prepare themselves for top-level management and instructional positions within the VCCS.” According to VCCS Director of Professional Development, Nan Ottenritter, Ms. Hawkins is the first faculty member at Thomas Nelson Community College to be selected as a Chancellor’s Fellow.

Community College Chancellor Bicycling 700 Miles to Enhance College Opportunities for Foster Care Youth

RICHMOND — Glenn DuBois, the chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges, is using his summer vacation to bicycle hundreds of miles to raise awareness of the plight of Virginia’s foster children. Dubois’ trip will stretch 700-miles from Winchester, south to Wytheville and then east through Hampton Roads. It’s expected to take two weeks.

DuBois’ ride will take him through seven of Virginia’s Community Colleges, several of which are participating in this coming year’s Great Expectation pilot program.
