WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – When Navy Reservist David Fraley received orders to go to Kuwait, he wasn’t ready to stop attending class at Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC). With help from Assistant Professor of English Diana Martin, Fraley  interacted in real-time with TNCC students in ENG 262: Creative Writing, a class held at the Historic Triangle campus in Williamsburg. When the class convened at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, it was 3 a.m. on Wednesday in Kuwait.

Fraley is one of the many students at TNCC who employ distance learning tools. The College delivers distance education through several means including podcasting, Blackboard and Adobe Acrobat Connect Pro, a software that allows instructors and students to interact live and facilitate distance classes in real-time. The software permits the use of Microsoft PowerPoint slides, application sharing, as well as live and recorded video, among other things.

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will triple the size of its Nursing program at the Historic Triangle campus in Williamsburg during the spring 2010 semester. The College will welcome 30 students into the program normally limited to 10 new students. The increased admission is attributed to the larger facilities at the College’s newest campus. Opened in July, the Historic Triangle campus is a 120,000 square-foot facility that sits on more than 74 acres of land next to Warhill High School at 4601 Opportunity Way in Williamsburg.

“The classrooms are state-of-the-art with Smartboards and high-tech sound. The Nursing lab is very spacious with a large nurse’s station, seven complete hospital beds with mannequins and examination equipment, computer stations, and a simulation mannequin,” said Associate Professor of Nursing Pam Biernacki.

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will introduce an array of new opportunities for Computer Arts students at the Historic Triangle campus in Williamsburg. The spring 2010 semester will include expanded course offerings and partnerships that will enable students to work with artists in the Williamsburg community.

Cece Wheeler, Professor of Art and Computer Arts Department Head at TNCC, hopes to provide community exposure for TNCC’s Computer Arts students through a relationship with the Williamsburg Symphonia which has numerous performances annually and boasts an extensive patron/subscriber list. “They have asked my video students to edit short clips of movies to be played at the Symphonia Movie Night concert in February at the historic Kimball Theatre,” Wheeler said.
