TNCC President and Diversity Institute Among 2010 Unity Award Honorees

The Hampton Citizens’ Unity Commission has announced that TNCC President Alvin J. Schexnider and the College’s Institute for Diversity & Inclusion have been named among recipients of the 2010 Unity Awards. The Annual Unity Awards Ceremony recognizes individuals, initiatives, organizations, schools, and businesses that have had a positive impact on racial and cultural diversity for Hampton.

Selected from a record number of nominations which were solicited from the community, the honorees will be recognized at the 2010 Unity Awards Dinner Ceremony on Thursday, May 13 at the Charles Taylor Arts Center in Hampton. Others selected to receive the 2010 Unity Award include Gaylene Kanoyton, Pastor Richard W. Wills Jr. and the Another View program from WHRO TV15.

TNCC Site of May 23 Chesapeake Bay Wind Ensemble Performance

The Chesapeake Bay Wind Ensemble will present “Are We There Yet?” at Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) on Sunday, May 23 at 3 p.m. in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium, Hampton campus.

The Chesapeake Wind Ensemble was founded in 1998 to provide an avenue for local amateur musicians to hone their skills. With about 40 members, the ensemble plays a wide variety of pieces at a myriad of venues in the Hampton Roads area, presenting approximately eight performances annually. The nonprofit organization offers special opportunities for its high school musicians with scholarships for some of the graduating students.

TNCC Hosts Career Camp for Teens June 21-25

Some local high school students in grades 10 and 11 will be off to camp this summer but not just any ordinary summer camp. Thanks to career coaches at Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Office of Outreach and Recruitment and the Newport News Public Schools Career and Technical Education (CTE) Department these campers will be on the fast track to charting plans for their future careers.

Set for June 21-25 on TNCC’s Hampton campus and open to 25 students, the summer camp is called Time for New Career Choices: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM ) 101. The weeklong camp will give students an opportunity to explore careers in the healthcare field that are STEM-related.

TNCC to Recognize Local, State Leaders During May 15 Commencement

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will recognize several government officials and community members for their contributions in education and public service during its 41st commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 15 at 10:00 a.m. at the Hampton University Convocation Center. TNCC President Alvin J. Schexnider will present several new awards, including the Thomas Nelson Medallion and the Dana B. Hamel Award. The President will also present an Honorary Associate Degree to a local business/industry leader and the annual Distinguished Alumni Award.

TNCC Selects Riverside Health System to Receive 2010 Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) selected Riverside Health System for the 2010 Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy in acknowledgment of Riverside’s exceptional contributions to TNCC. The award was presented Tuesday, April 20 during a luncheon ceremony at the Country Club of Virginia.

The Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy is hosted by the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education (VFCCE) to honor the leading philanthropists from each of Virginia’s 23 community colleges as well as the system’s statewide foundation. This marks the fifth year the awards have been given.

TNCC is Site of Hampton Roads Ballet’s Spring Performance

The Hampton Roads Civic Ballet will present its spring performance at Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) on Saturday, May 1 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, May 2 at 3 p.m. at the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium, Templin Hall on the Hampton campus.

The Hampton Roads Civic Ballet, which holds residency at TNCC’s auditorium, was founded in 1948 and provides a pre-professional performing experience for intermediate and advanced students at the Academy of Ballet in Hampton. The nonprofit organization combines classical ballet and contemporary choreography to provide students with a versatile dance experience while teaching them to appreciate set design, costume creation and more. The students present two productions annually in addition to community performances at local festivals, schools, hospitals and nursing homes.
