Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) student Christopher Duke was among students statewide chosen as 2011 Commonwealth Legacy Scholars. Representing Virginia’s 23 community colleges, Commonwealth Legacy Scholars received scholarships of up to $3,500 for the 2011-2012 school year. The students were honored during a Virginia Foundation for Community College Education (VFCCE) luncheon in Charlottesville in mid-November.
“These outstanding students are Virginia’s future leaders. They represent the potential in all of our youth, and the difference that we each can make in the world,” said Glenn DuBois, Chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges (VCCS).

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will host Community Health Day on Wednesday, September 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Espada Conference Center in Moore Hall on the Hampton campus. Sponsored in part by the TNCC Educational Foundation, Division of Engineering, Science and Allied Health, and TNCC’s Red Cross Club, the event will include a Red Cross blood drive, blood typing, personal health screenings and a 50-50 drawing to benefit local disaster relief.
“The idea behind Community Health Day is to create a collaborative opportunity for service learning about all facets of health for the TNCC community,” said Biology Professor Dr. Ann S. Evans.

The Thomas Nelson Community College Educational Foundation, Inc. received two grant awards totaling $170,563 from the Williamsburg Community Health Foundation to fund four projects to enhance the quality of life and health for citizens living in Greater Williamsburg. “Thomas Nelson Community College is committed to expanding its allied health programs in the Historic Triangle. Collaborative relationships such as this one are key to ensuring that citizens of the Greater Williamsburg community and our region have highly qualified health care providers in their community,” said Thomas Nelson Community College president Dr. Charles A. Taylor. “This grant award reaffirms the commitment of the Williamsburg Community Health Foundation to improving the quality of life for the citizens of Greater Williamsburg. Thomas Nelson Community College will continue its commitment to delivering quality academic programs to the community. We value the trust this organization has placed in our programs.”

The Virginia Peninsula – Robert F. Shuford, Sr., interim president of the Thomas Nelson Community College Educational Foundation, Inc., received the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy. He was among 23 VCCS honorees who received the prestigious first-time award.
VCCS Chancellor Dr. Glenn DuBois presented the awards March 31 during the 3rd Annual Foundation Leadership Conference in Charlottesville. The Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy is a new program designed to recognize the vital role of community college benefactors whose support helps VCCS institutions make a difference in students’ lives.

Ferguson Enterprises on behalf of Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) student Marla Petty, donated $1,330 to the Thomas Nelson Community College Educational Foundation to establish a Business Scholarship for Single Women.
Under the scholarship, one-time awards of $400 each will go to three deserving female students this upcoming fall semester, according to a spokesperson for Newport News- based Ferguson, the leading plumbing and heating distributor in the U.S., and one of the core businesses comprising Wolseley plc, based in the U.K. Awards will be given each semester thereafter until the scholarship funds are exhausted.
