Interested in attending Thomas Nelson Community College? Have questions about financial aid? Join us for Super Saturday, a free financial aid workshop on Feb. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Thomas Nelson Community College’s Hampton campus.

Financial aid counselors will be on hand helping students and their parents complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Plus, students may register to win a $100 scholarship for textbooks.

TNCC Observes Black History Month with a Series of Free Events

Thomas Nelson Community College will observe Black History Month with a series of free presentations and other activities. Themed “African American Women Innovators: Thinkers, Creators, Dreamers,” the celebration begins Tuesday, Feb. 7. The schedule is indicated below.

Tuesday, Feb. 7
TNCC Welcomes Carolyn McKinstry

  • 12:00 p.m. — Meet and greet
    Library, Historic Triangle campus, Williamsburg
  • 7:00 p.m. — Sixteenth Street Baptist Church Experience
    Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium (MTCA),
    Templin Hall, Hampton campus
  • 8:00 p.m. — Meet and greet/book signing
    MTCA, Templin Hall, Hampton campus

As a child, Carolyn McKinstry survived the bombing of Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala. After losing four friends in the attack, McKinstry attended mass meetings and rallies at the church as a teen and was among thousands of students hosed by firemen during marches in 1963. The Birmingham native survived a second bombing that destroyed a large portion of her home in 1964. McKinstry has shared her experiences with the History and Discovery Channels, CNN, Life Magazine, The Oprah Winfrey Show, national and local Public Radio and numerous other organizations and academic institutions.

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will observe the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday January 11-14 with a slate of activities. The calendar of events is as follows:

January 11 – Presidential Leadership Award Luncheon
11:30 a.m., Great Wolf Lodge, Williamsburg
Special guest Jeanne Zeidler, former Mayor of Williamsburg, will be awarded the TNCC Presidential Leadership Award. By invitation only.


Fall Fest Activities Scheduled This Week

Fall Fest activities will take place on the Hampton and Historic Triangle campuses this week. All students, faculty and staff are invited to bring family and friends to enjoy this annual event. Music, cotton candy, popcorn and more will be a part of the fun. Keepsake photos in “The Big Red Chair” will also be available.

On Wednesday, September 23 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. the Hampton campus courtyard will be the site of activities. The fun moves to the Gators Café, Griffin Hall, in the event of rain.

Enjoy a gospel music extravaganza, featuring performances by the TNCC Gospel Choir, Youth Challenge Choir (Newport News), Colossian Baptist Church (Newport News) and other local church choirs and church praise dancers. Guest Emcee, Aisha McCollum, Co-host of Urban Gospel Showcase, WNSB Hot 91.9 and our own Reverend Wayne Davis.

TNCC Office Door Decorating Contest
“Catch the Spirit” by decorating your office door. Help to spread the TNCC spirit, win a prize and bragging rights. Decorations must be completed by February 5, 2007. Winners will be announced at the Homecoming Pep Rally on Friday. Prize: Free office lunch (up to 10 people or up to $150) with TNCC President Dr. Charles A. Taylor.
