April 1 is the official start of National Financial Literacy Month.  The month-long initiative offers an opportunity for individuals to learn about finances and effective strategies to better their overall financial situation.  The effort started in 2003 when the United States Senate declared the month of April National Financial Literacy Month. Understanding money matters like creating and managing a budget, paying down debt while saving for emergencies and creating achievable financial goals is an important step for anyone making and spending money.

Financial Aid and Registration for Summer 2012

Summer registration begins for currently enrolled students on Monday, March 26, 2012.  The 2012 Summer Aid Application will also be available beginning March 26th and must be completed to be considered for summer assistance.  The priority deadline to complete this application is April 20, 2012.  If we receive your summer aid application after April 20, 2012, your financial aid will not be available by the tuition due date on May 4, 2012. If you submit your summer aid application after April 20, 2012, you will need to have another way to pay for your tuition and fees, as well as any bookstore charges.

Detailed information regarding the summer aid process and the summer aid application will be available on our website.

It is important to read the information before applying for summer aid.  You can also pick-up the information from Financial Aid Services in Griffin Hall, Room 212 (Hampton) and at the Historic Triangle Campus (Williamsburg).

Free Financial Aid Workshop, Super Saturday, Feb. 4 at TNCC

Super Saturday, a free financial aid workshop for college-bound and returning college students of all ages, takes place Feb. 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) in Templin Hall on the Hampton campus. Sponsored by the Virginia Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, the event is open to the public.

TNCC is among more than 60 sites across Virginia holding Super Saturday. Financial aid counselors will be on hand helping students and their parents complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Plus, students may register to win a $100 scholarship for textbooks. (more…)

Keeping it Simple – Managing your Student Loan Debt

The U.S. Department of Education will offer qualified borrowers a short-term loan consolidation opportunity from January through June 30, 2012, as announced on October 26, 2011. To help provide guidance to your students, keep in mind the following details.

  • This program is not yet available and not everyone will qualify. Beginning in January, federal loan servicers will contact student loan borrowers who qualify.
  • It’s important for borrowers to wait for eligibility notification and application instructions to determine if they qualify. After receiving instructions, qualified borrowers will be able to apply through a new online process.

New Online Video Tool at TNCC Addresses Students’ Financial Aid Questions

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) has launched Financial Aid TV (FATV), an online video tool designed to help students better understand college financial aid and the steps needed to apply for aid. Available 24 hours a day, year round, FATV can be viewed at http://tncc.financialaidtv.com/

“The service will provide financial aid services with another tool to assist students with questions regarding the financial aid process, as well as questions related to veteran benefits and financial literacy. FATV provides us with a different avenue of communication that students will respond well to,” said TNCC’s Director of Financial Aid Services Kathryn Anderson.

Receiving your Financial Aid Refund Check for the 2011 Fall Semester

Now that the Fall 2011 Semester has started and census (the last day to receive a refund) has passed for the 16-week session, the Financial Aid Office is preparing the process of authorizing financial aid. This will be applied toward tuition, fees, and bookstore charges, if you used financial aid to purchase your books and supplies.
