Important News for TNCC Student Loan Borrowers

The Financial Aid Office at Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) is writing to alert you to an incident of data theft involving student loans. As you may have seen in the media, a theft occurred last week at ECMC (Educational Credit Management Corporation) headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota. ECMC is TNCC’s loan guarantor.

It involved portable media devices that contained personally identifiable information of student loan borrowers. The stolen data contained information of approximately 3.3 million individuals, including names, addresses, dates of birth, and social security numbers. No checking, savings, or credit card account information was included in the data that was taken.

Scholarship and Loan Forgiveness Programs Now Open for Students in Automotive Aftermarket Field

The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) is now accepting applications for its 2010 Scholarship and Loan Forgiveness programs. These programs are available to students preparing for a career in the automotive industry at any college, and to recent graduates working for SEMA member companies. SEMA is a trade association whose members are manufacturers, distributors, retailers, publishing companies, auto restorers, street-rod builders, restylers, car clubs, race teams and more. SEMA members make, buy, sell and use all kinds of specialty automotive parts and accessories.

The SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund is dedicated to fostering the next generation of industry leaders and innovators, offering scholarships to today’s brightest students at universities, colleges and/or vocational schools in the United States and Canada. Awards range from $1,000–$2,000, with $4,000 going to the top student.

Thomas Nelson Community College Moving to Direct Lending

Beginning with the 2010 summer semester, Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will participate exclusively in the Federal Direct Student Loan Program which includes Subsidized Student Loans, Unsubsidized Student Loans and Parent Loans. TNCC previously participated in the Federal Family Educational Loan Program (FFELP) and students were required to choose a private lender.

The Federal Government is the lender in the Direct Student Loan Program. Students and parents interested in federal student and parent loans will be required to apply through the Direct Student Loan Program and complete new master promissory notes.

More information will be sent to students at their VCCS e-mail addresses.

The U.S. Department of Education has information available about the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program that may be of interest to you when you begin repayment of your student loans. The Question and Answer section details which loans, payments, and employers are required to be eligible. Visit the Federal Student Aid website for more information.

The Health Resources and Services Administration has extended the application deadline for the Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program to March 11, 2010. Registered nurses (who have completed training), working at least 32 hours a week in certain non-profit health care facilities may be eligible to have some of their qualifying student loans repaid in exchange for their service.  Visit the Health Resources and Services Administration website for more information.

TNCC Students Can Explore College Funding Options at Feb. 13 Event

HAMPTON, Va. — Super Saturday 2010, a financial aid information seminar for students who plan to attend college, is set for Saturday, February 13 at 32 locations throughout Virginia. Thomas Nelson Community College area students can take advantage of this free event at three locations – Peninsula Higher Education Center (600 Butler Farm Road, Hampton), Warwick High School (51 Copeland Lane, Newport News) or the College of William and Mary (Williamsburg).

Beginning at 10 a.m. through 2 p.m., the event will give college bound students and their parents an opportunity to explore funding options for college. All participating students will be entered in a drawing to receive $100 towards college textbooks; door prizes will also be awarded.

State budget cuts are hitting community colleges hard

State budget cuts are hitting Virginia’s community colleges at the worse possible time. Enrollment records are being set, with almost 5 percent more students enrolling in the fall of 2008 than did so a year earlier.

Meanwhile community colleges, including Thomas Nelson in Hampton, had their budgets cut by 5 percent in the fall of 2007, another 5 percent in December and are looking at another 5 percent in July for the next fiscal year.
