TNCC Receives $35,000+ Grant for New Mathematics Program

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) aims to increase success in developmental math courses with Student Success Using Math Modules (SSUMM). The program was introduced as a pilot this fall for students enrolled in MTH 03: Algebra I and MTH 04: Algebra II and will be added to the College’s offerings in spring 2010.

TNCC was awarded a $65,000 Chancellors E-Learning Enhancement and Development (CEED) grant last year to develop SSUMM. This year, the College received a $36,015 CEED grant to pilot the program. TNCC mathematics instructors Catherine Hoffmaster, Libby Arnesen, Elena Byrd, Heng Fu, Krystyna Karminska-Makagon, Theresa Nystrom and Julia Varbalow developed the program.

TNCC gets $1.99M to expand industrial training

Thomas Nelson Community College received a $1.99 million Community-Based Job Training Grant this month from the U.S. Labor Department to expand its pipeline of employees to the manufacturing industry.

This is the Hampton college’s second big national grant in the past five years. It received a $1.95 million President’s High Growth Job Training Initiative grant four years ago to create an employment pipeline in advanced manufacturing.

TNCC Awarded Nearly $2 million by U.S. Labor Dept. for Advanced Manufacturing

Thomas Nelson Community College has been awarded a $1.99 million Community Based Job Training Grant Tuesday from the U.S. Department of Labor to expand its successful manufacturing pipeline. This is the College’s second major national grant in five years.

The College received a $1.95 million High Skills High Growth Jobs Initiative grant four years ago to create an employment pipeline in advanced manufacturing and has since placed over 4,100 individuals in advanced manufacturing jobs, in partnership with the region’s community colleges, workforce boards,  one-stop centers and more than 60 regional manufacturers.

Grant to help TNCC boost student success in math

A sticking point in its math curriculum could soon be solved by a new effort at Thomas Nelson Community College.

The Virginia Community College System awarded a $65,000 grant for TNCC faculty to create a new way of teaching developmental math. A study showed that approximately 2,000 students were enrolled in those classes in the fall of 2006. However, about 50 percent dropped out before finishing.

TNCC Receives Grant for Career Coach in Advanced Manufacturing

Thomas Nelson Community College has received a grant from the Virginia Community College System for a new Career Coach in Advanced Manufacturing.

The Thomas Nelson career coach will work with students in the Greater Peninsula high schools including the New Horizon’s Governor’s Academy for Innovation, Technology, and Engineering (GAITE).   Students will learn about high school and college articulated courses in career pathways for employment with Peninsula companies in advanced manufacturing, engineering, and engineering technologies.

TNCC Faculty Maury Middleton Receives Engineering VISION 2008 Grant

VIRGINIA PENINSULA — Thomas Nelson Community College Associate Professor of Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) Maury Middleton is one of three faculty members from across the United States to receive an Engineering VISION 2008 grant from Engineering.com., Inc. The Engineering VISION grant was founded to encourage excellence in engineering education. The grants are awarded annually to engineering instructors who demonstrate an ability to develop outstanding classroom and field educational aids that utilize advanced technology. In addition to Middleton, Professor Edwin Odon of the University of Idaho and Dr. Zezhong Chevy Chen of Concordia University were also grant recipients.
