Groundbreaking Marks Long-Term Growth for Thomas Nelson Community College in the Historic Triangle

Thomas Nelson Community College will break ground on a three-story, 120,000 square foot building for its permanent campus in the Historic Triangle on Wednesday, March 28 at 1:30 p.m. The ceremony will take place at the new campus site located in the Lightfoot area near the intersection of Route 60 and Centerville Road, adjacent to the newest high school in the Williamsburg-James City County school division . The Historic Triangle campus is funded by $17.6M from the General Obligation Bond for Higher Education passed by Virginia voters in November 2002 and $8.5M state funding passed by Virginia legislators in 2006.

The featured speaker at the Groundbreaking Ceremony is Virginia Secretary of Education, Dr. Thomas R. Morris. Joining him to celebrate this milestone for the College and the residents of Williamsburg, James City and upper York County are Dr. Glenn DuBois, chancellor of the Virginia Community College System, Virginia Senator Tommy Norment, Virginia delegates, Melanie Rapp, William Barlow and Phil Hamilton and representatives from the localities. Business and education leaders as well as the College’s faculty, staff and students have also been invited to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony.

Thomas Nelson Community College to Break Ground on New Historic Triangle Campus

A groundbreaking ceremony will take place Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. to celebrate the upcoming construction of Thomas Nelson Community College’s new Historic Triangle Campus. The new campus site is located in the Lightfoot area of James City County, near the intersection of Route 60 and Centerville Road.

The new campus will be built on 73.46 acres of land on the Warhill site, which was offered by James City County to the Commonwealth of Virginia for the purpose of building a campus for the College. Strategically located next to the Williamsburg-James City County (W-JCC) new Warhill high school, the College will work in collaboration with the W-JCC school system to develop programs and other opportunities that will facilitate the transition of high school students to college. The new campus will also play a major role in serving the workforce development needs of the business community and in assisting individual citizens achieve their educational goals.

Based on a projected enrollment of nearly 7,000 students, the master site plans includes state-of-the-art educational facilities that will be housed in five buildings for academic, administrative, student and faculty support and a Physical Plant facility. Surface parking lots and parking decks are also included in the plan. The first phase of construction will be a 120,000 square foot building slated to be completed by December 2008.

The Historic Triangle campus is the only new campus being built in the Virginia Community College System. The master site plan, designed by Moseley Architects of Virginia Beach has been approved by the State Board for Community Colleges.
