The Office of Outreach and Recruitment has been renamed the Office of Secondary School Programs. This change was made to accurately reflect the functions performed therein and show our commitment to creating a smooth transition for high school students into college or the workforce. Located in suite 709 in Hampton III, the office still manages TNCC’s Dual Enrollment, Career Coach and Career Pathways programs. It is staffed by two part time Dual Enrollment Coordinators and five part time Career Coaches. Kris Rarig supervises these programs as well as Enrollment Services. She also chairs the Joint Recruitment Committee and coordinates outreach events. The Office of Secondary School Programs can be reached at 825-2801 or 825-2706.

Middle College Expands to Williamsburg

Workforce Development now offers the Middle College program in Williamsburg. The free program prepares young adults ages 18-24 years for in-demand careers as they earn their GED. Classes take place at TNCC’s Historic Triangle campus is Williamsburg. Available training includes Nurse Aide, Welding, HVAC, Medical Coding and Billing, Automotive, and more.

Middle College offers young adults who have not completed high school opportunities and employment training. In less than eight weeks, students can earn their GED and enroll in college via this innovative initiative. Since the program’s inception in 2009, TNCC has graduated several students and put them on the pathway to a rewarding career.

Taking college-level courses, on campus or at a high school, gives students a head start.

If getting a jump start on college courses doesn’t appeal to high school students, it’s possible the reduced price grabs their parents’ attention.

Those two selling points have made a program called dual enrollment increasingly popular at Thomas Nelson Community College. It allows students to take college-level courses either in high school or on campus, and to potentially earn both high school and college credit.

“Time for New Career Choices: Engineering 101” Summer Career Exploration Camps at TNCC to Expose Students to Careers in Engineering

VIRGINIA PENINSULA — Aspiring engineers from area high school engineers will be off to camp this summer but not just any run of the mill summer camp. Time for New Choices, Engineering 101 is a free week-long summer camp offered by the Office of Outreach and Recruitment at Thomas Nelson Community College. Aimed at students in grades 9 through 10, the camp is designed to expose students to careers in the science and engineering industry. The camp features TNCC faculty and other professionals teaching engineering lessons through hands-on activities, demonstrations, lectures and field trips. Camp participants will also be given individualized career and educational development plans to share with their parents and guidance counselors for support in accomplishing their goals.

The first camp is scheduled for June 23-27 with activities from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Historic Triangle Campus in Williamsburg. The second camp which will begin July 7 will run daily from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. through July 11, at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center in Hampton. There is no fee to attend these camps. Interested students must register by June 6 by calling 825-3524 or by visiting the Office of Outreach and Recruitment located in the Hampton III Building at 535 Butler Farm Road.

Record Numbers of Students Benefit from Dual Enrollment Program with Thomas Nelson Community College

Registration for Dual Enrollment Courses Start October 1

THE VIRGINIA PENINSULA – The number of high school students taking advantage of the dual enrollment program offered by Thomas Nelson Community College through the public school systems on the Peninsula has grown by 480% since 2003 – 2004. During the 2005-06 year, 1,490 students or 231 FTEs participated in the program. In 2003-04, the college had 310 students or 66 FTEs participating in the dual enrollment program.

Currently, all the school systems in the service area of Thomas Nelson Community College, including Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, York County, Williamsburg-James City County, and New Horizons Regional Technical Center and Governors School are participating in the dual enrollment program with Thomas Nelson, as are Hampton Christian Schools and Denbigh Baptist Christian School. Home-schooled students are also able to participate in the dual enrollment program by attending classes on the Thomas Nelson campus. The local school divisions receive a discounted rate for tuition.

Summer Career Exploration Camps at Thomas Nelson to Expose High School Students to Future Careers & Professions

THE VIRGINIA PENINSULA — Some local and area high school students will be off to camp this summer but not just your ordinary summer camp. Thanks to the Office of Outreach and Recruitment at Thomas Nelson Community College, these campers will be on the fast track to charting their college plans and future professions.

The College’s Outreach and Recruitment office is sponsoring career camps for high school students in June and July, according to Dr. Crystal Taylor, Outreach and Recruitment Director. The first camp which will focus on the college selection process is scheduled for June 26-29 with activities from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the College’s Historic Triangle campus. Beginning July 24, the second camp will run daily from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. through July 27 at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center in Hampton. This camp is designed to expose students to a variety of careers and professions, noted Taylor.
