TNCC Professor Leads Presentation on Slavery and the Constitution

Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Assistant Professor of English Hollis Pruitt will present “Among Jefferson’s Heirs,” a lecture about the differing constitutional interpretation of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas. Free and open to the public, the one-hour presentation begins at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 19 in the Wythe Hall Gallery, Hampton campus. Pruitt will also present the program at TNCC’s Historic Triangle campus library Thursday, March 21 at 12:30 p.m.

Pruitt joined the TNCC faculty in 2001 and currently teaches Introduction to African American Studies, Creative Writing II and Survey of American Literature I and II. He also serves as Coordinator of TNCC’s Creative Writing and American Literature classes. The Mississippi native holds a bachelor’s degree in Radio/TV/Film from the University of Arkansas and a graduate degree in Creative Writing from the University of Tennessee. He is currently pursuing doctoral studies at William & Mary.

Update:  The college will open on Tuesday, October 30, at 11:00 a.m. for all faculty, staff and students (except any essential personnel who may have to report earlier).   This decision was based on an assessment of weather and road conditions, the condition of the campus facilities and grounds, and openings for public schools and local colleges and universities.


Due to Hurricane Sandy TNCC will be closed on Monday, October 29th. Both the Hampton and Historic Triangle campuses as well as the Southeast Higher Education Center will be closed for safety reasons.

TNCC Launches New Summer Camp Program for Children at the Historic Triangle Campus

Children in Williamsburg have a new option for summer fun this year.  Thomas Nelson Community College will offer short interactive summer camps for children ages 10-15 years old for the first time at the Historic Triangle campus. The camps will run from Monday, July 25 to Friday, July 29.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for the first session and 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. for the second session. Campers may register for one session ($65) or two sessions ($120).

TNCC Readies New Campus

Construction workers scurried around Thomas Nelson Community College’s Historic Triangle Campus on Tuesday as they put finishing touches on the first building of the school’s new James City County location.

About a dozen workers spent the afternoon landscaping the exterior of the building and wiring classrooms for new equipment and technology as TNCC officials gear up for July 6, when students will use the building for the first time as they register for the fall semester, which begins Aug. 22.

Services at Thomas Nelson Community College Day Not Available on Wednesday, March 5

Administrative services at Thomas Nelson Community College’s Hampton and Historic Triangle campuses will not be available for students or the general public on Wednesday, March 5, 2008. The College is taking advantage of the Spring Break period to provide professional development opportunities for the staff on that day.

TNCC is currently registering for its eight week class session which starts on Monday, March 10. Students interested in registering in person for the eight-week class session can do so during the regular posted hours on Tuesday (8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.), Thursday (8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.) and Friday (8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.). On Wednesday, March 5, registration services will only be available from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Students can register online anytime at the College’s website at www.tncc.edu

New Eight-Week Class Session to Start at TNCC March 10

A new eight-week class offered at Thomas Nelson Community College will give new or returning students and working professionals the opportunity to start or continue their education this spring semester. On Saturday, March 10, more than seventy day, evening, weekend and online classes will start at the Hampton campus, the Historic Triangle campus and at the recently opened Southeast Higher Education Center in Newport News located at 5720 Marshall Avenue in the Achievable Dream Middle and High School.

At the Southeast Higher Education Center, where unduplicated student enrollment has more than doubled from the fall semester 2007 to Spring 08, from 68 to165 (as of Feb. 13), students can take advantage of such classes as Introduction to Computer Applications and Concepts, History and Appreciation for Art, Grammar for Writing and Speaking, Introduction to Office Technology, Keyboarding II, Multimedia Software, Office Administration II, Principles of Sociology, United States History I and Word Processing.
