TNCC’s Honor Society Chapter Invites Students to a ‘Commit to Completion’ Event

Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Phi Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK) will host a “Commit to Completion” signing event Wednesday, March 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Hampton campus. As part of a national initiative called College Completion Challenge, PTK invites students to gather in the campus courtyard to sign a mass pledge to complete their associate degrees or certificates before leaving community college for transfer to a four-year institution or to enter the job market. In the event of rain, activities will take place in the Library Gallery, Wythe Hall.

The organization also asks administrators, faculty and staff to sign the pledge, committing themselves to do whatever they can to facilitate completion of student credentials.

As keynote speaker during the event, TNCC President John T. Dever will address the importance of college completion. Student support groups from the College will also be on hand to provide information about their services.

TNCC Student Elected to State Office for Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) student Jerry Van Harris has been elected to serve as a Regional President for Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society representing Virginia. A member of PTK’s Phi Sigma chapter at TNCC, Harris was installed in March during the organization’s regional convention in Roanoke, Virginia and will be officially recognized during its 94th International Convention in Nashville, Tennessee April 12-14. He has also been designated as the official flag bearer representing Virginia during the convention’s opening ceremony.

Harris will serve one year as a regional president. “I was honored and surprised that [PTK peers] thought I would be a good regional president. I want to represent the chapter and Thomas Nelson well while in the position. I hope to promote education, whether it’s for personal or professional purposes, as an asset to everyone’s life. Learning is a lifelong experience,” he said.

PTK International Honor Society Chapter at TNCC Hosts Fall 2011 Induction

Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Phi Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society will host its fall 2011 induction ceremony on Friday, October 28 at 7 p.m. on the Hampton campus. Free and open to the public, the ceremony take places in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium, Templin Hall.

Dr. Crystal B. Taylor, Instructional Supervisor for Career and Technical Education with Newport News Public Schools, will be the keynote speaker. Formerly Director of Outreach and Recruitment for TNCC, she has Bachelor’s degree in accounting from Hofstra University, a Master’s degree in Education from Regent University and a Ph.D. in Vocational and Technical Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Her career in education spans more than 10 years and includes service as a Cooperative Office Education Coordinator and Future Business Leaders of America Advisor. She has also taught in subject areas such as Business Information Technology.

TNCC’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Holds Fall Induction

HAMPTON, Va. – Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Phi Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society will host its fall 2009 induction on Thursday, November 5th. Free and open to the public, the ceremony takes place at 7 p.m. in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium, Templin Hall, located on the Hampton campus.

Virginia Keithley, director of the TRiO Program at TNCC, is the keynote speaker. Mrs. Keithley has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Christopher Newport University, and a Master’s degree in Student Personnel Services as well as an Educational Specialist degree in Counseling from the College of William and Mary. She joined TNCC in November 2005.

TNCC Honor Society Launches Lecture Series

Thomas Nelson’s Phi Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society will launch a lecture series beginning Tuesday, March 24 based on the topic, The Paradox of Affluence: Choices, Challenges, and Consequences. The series featuring TNCC professors consists of three lectures conducted on the Hampton campus. Free and open to the public, the lectures all begin at 6 p.m. in the Espada Room at Moore Hall.

The first in the series — Genetics of Liver Disease in a Multigenerational Population of Maltese Dogs: The Paradox of Affluence on Dog Breeds — is presented by Assistant Professor of Biology Jacqueline Spencer. Spencer, who is also assistant dean of the Science and Allied Health Division, will address the problems of liver vasculature that affect at least 33 breeds of purebred dogs, such as Maltese, Yorkshire Terriers, Havanese, Shih Tzu, and Cairn Terriers. She will explore how these diseases have increased the affluence of dog breeders and owners to preserve and maintain these harmful genes in the affected breeds, leading to dogs with liver problems which tend to be smaller in size and will sell for more as puppies.

•    “The Iraq War and Its Consequences in the Middle East”
Thursday, October 26 at 6:00 pm in the Mary Christian Auditorium.
Presenter: Dan Senor, former Chief Spokesperson for the U.S.-led Coalition in Iraq and a Senior Advisor to Presidential Envoy L. Paul Bremer III.
