TNCC and PCFWD Study Identifies Over 11,000 Upcoming Manufacturing Jobs on the Peninsula

On Monday, September 17, the Peninsula Council for Workforce Development and Thomas Nelson Community College released Skills to Succeed Inventory, a comprehensive study of careers with 14 top Virginia Peninsula manufacturing companies. The companies report they will need 11,500 skilled trades and precision production workers from 2012 to 2016.

The study, funded by the Ford Foundation and Virginia’s Community Colleges, is part of the Peninsula Career Pathways Collaborative, a community-wide initiative that includes businesses, public school divisions, adult education centers, the community college, and regional economic and workforce agencies that will build career pathways. It includes skill-specific information on the number of upcoming manufacturing job openings, identifying 11 high-demand occupations.

This Fair connects qualified jobseekers with the region’s top employers. Since many employers conduct on-site interviews, participants are strongly encouraged to wear professional dress and to bring extra copies of their resumes.

TNCC Nurse Aide Program Enrolling

Thomas Nelson Community College’s two-month Nurse Aide program in Williamsburg is now registering. This state-approved program prepares you to provide direct patient care under supervision, help long term care residents, and qualifies you to take Virginia’s Nurse Aide Exam.

Classes are held at the Williamsburg campus, 4601 Opportunity  Way, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

TNCC, Canon Offering Process Operations Positions

Canon Connect Pipeline in conjunction with Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) is recruiting for process operators to work on automated process lines, monitor processes, troubleshoot and perform minor repairs. Candidates are required to have completed Math 03, Math 04 or take the COMPASS with a passing score of 32 or higher in Algebra and take other related job skills assessments.

Individuals who have process operations or related manufacturing experience and want a job with excellent benefits, may contact Franz Albertini in Career Services at 757-865-5882. The deadline for submitting an application is March 10.

 

TNCC Workforce Development Hosts Employment Agency Forum

On Tuesday, December 7 from 7:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., Thomas Nelson Community College Workforce Development will host an Employment Agency Forum for area staffing agencies at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center (PWDC) located at 600 Butler Farm Road, adjacent to the College’s Hampton campus.

The Forum will cover:

  • New training and assessments in HVAC, machining and welding
  • Challenges to training, recruiting, and placing and retaining clients
  • Strategies for success

Southeast Virginia Rapid Response Team Hosts Summit at TNCC

As layoffs continue to impact the region, Rapid Response teams are working to enhance services they offer businesses and affected employees. On November 15 and 16, Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) Workforce Development, as the lead Rapid Response agency for one-fourth of Virginia, hosted a Multi-Regional Rapid Response Summit at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center (PWDC) which is adjacent to TNCC’s Hampton, Virginia campus.

Rapid Response is the function that uses Workforce Investment Act resources to go to worksites during a layoff or closure to assist affected employees, providing information on unemployment insurance and related benefits and community resources for retraining and employment. (more…)
