More than 450 Students to Attend VCCS Student Leadership Conference

More than 450 student leaders from community colleges across the Commonwealth of Virginia will assemble on the Peninsula for the Virginia Community College System’s (VCCS) Annual Student Leadership Conference to gain valuable information on how to become effective leaders. The Nov. 2-4 conference at the Newport News Marriot Hotel is co-sponsored by the VCCS and Northrop Grumman Newport News. Thomas Nelson Community College is serving as the host institution for this year’s conference. TNCC President, Dr. Charles A. Taylor will greet and welcome students during the 6:00 p.m. Opening Session on Friday, November 2.

Entitled, Leaders under Construction, the conference will give students an opportunity to meet leaders of major corporations such as Mr. Mike Petters, CEO of Northrop Grumman Newport News. Among featured speakers for the event are Dr. Terry Whisnant, President of Horizon Seminars whose presentation is entitled “How to Get Almost Everything You Want Almost All the Time;” noted author Mr. Jonathan Sprinkles of Sprinklisms presenting “Never, Never Give Up!” and Comedian Bernie McGrenahan presenting his “Happy Hour Tour” which provides insight about when partying in college interferes with achieving one’s educational goals. Others speakers include Mr. Paul Michael Marretti, a strong supporter of the Special Olympics discussing “How to be One’s Best” and Dr. Charles E. Wilson Jr., Vice-Provost for Undergraduate Studies and Dean of University College presenting, “Leaders Under Construction.”


TNCC to Host African-American Community College Leaders from Across the Nation

Thomas Nelson Community College will be host to the 2007 Lakin Institute for Mentored Leadership October 15-20. Roughly 40 participants including community college presidents and potential community college leaders from across the nation will assemble on the Virginia Peninsula for the conference which is sponsored by the 2007 Presidents’ Round Table of African-American CEOs in association with the American Association of Community Colleges.

Thomas Nelson Community College President Dr. Charles A. Taylor is convener and chair of the Presidents’ Round Table of African-American CEOs for 2006-07. The organization’s annual meeting will coincide with the Lakin Institute which is now in its 14th year. Among the event’s featured speakers are, Norfolk State University President Dr. Carolyn Meyers, sharing her vision on the importance of turning leadership challenges into opportunities; Virginia Delegates Mamye BaCote and Jeoin Ward addressing the politics of leadership; and Dr. Belle Wheelan, President of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools discussing Accreditation and the Presidency.


Thomas Nelson Community College President is Convener of Nationwide Presidents’ Round Table of African-American CEOs

The Virginia Peninsula – Thomas Nelson Community College President Dr. Charles A. Taylor has been appointed as Convener, Chair, of the 2006-08 Presidents’ Round Table of African-American CEOs, a nationwide network of African-American leadership and academic expertise. As part of the celebration marking the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, the Presidents’ Round Table organization of African-American CEOs in community colleges will hold their annual meeting in the Williamsburg – Hampton Roads area with Thomas Nelson Community College serving as the host institution in 2007. More than 100 African-American Community College presidents, chancellors and CEOs from across the nation comprise the Presidents’ Round Table.

Founded in January 1983, the Presidents’ Round Table brings together African-American community college CEOs for the purpose of ensuring their success as college leaders.
