The Virginia Foundation for Community College Education (VFCCE) has announced its new Valley Proteins Fellowships program. This prestigious scholarship will award up to $5,000 for tuition, books, fees and expenses next year to 10 Virginia community college students planning to enter their second full academic year. The scholarship application will be available the first week of January online at

The deadline to apply is April 2. Fellows will be selected for the 2012-13 academic year based on their academic records, leadership potential and commitment to community service.

For seven years, Newport News resident John Dever zipped up and down Interstate 95 to his job at Northern Virginia Community College. This fall, his weekly commute ended as he moved into the president’s office at Thomas Nelson Community College.

His new job is not just closer to home — it’s also a homecoming. Dever, 65, is returning to the place he launched his community college career. He started at TNCC in 1975 as an English instructor.

TNCC Board to Meet September 28

The Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) Board will meet on Wednesday, September 28 at 5:30 p.m. in Room 717 of TNCC’s Hampton III Building located at 525 Butler Farm Road. The Board’s Financial and Municipal Liaison Committee convenes at 5:00 p.m. in Room 719 and its Curriculum, Instruction, and Student Services Committee is not scheduled to meet.

At 6:30 p.m., a reception honoring TNCC President Alvin J. Schexnider takes place in the Hampton III Building. Dr. Schexnider leaves the presidency in October having led the College since late 2008.

The general Board meeting is open to the public in accordance with the Virginia Freedom of Information Act.

TNCC Student Named Among Community College Legacy Scholars Statewide

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) student Christopher Duke was among students statewide chosen as 2011 Commonwealth Legacy Scholars. Representing Virginia’s 23 community colleges, the students will receive scholarships of up to $3,500 for the 2011-2012 school year. The Legacy Scholars will be honored in November during a Virginia Foundation for Community College Education (VFCCE) luncheon in Charlottesville.

The Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship Program was established in 2006 through the generosity of VFCCE donors to recognize students who demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to developing their leadership skills during high school, according to Dr. Glenn DuBois, Chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges (VCCS). Each scholarship bears the name of individual philanthropy leaders who support VCCS schools.


John T. Dever Selected to Become the Next President of Thomas Nelson Community College

Glenn DuBois, chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges (VCCS) announced today that Dr. John T. Dever will become the president of Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) at the beginning of October.

Dever’s career as a community college educator began in the English department of Thomas Nelson in 1975. He has worked at Blue Ridge Community College and Tidewater Community College. He is currently the Executive Vice President of Academic and Student Services at Northern Virginia Community College.

“John Dever began his career at Thomas Nelson Community College with a lot of energy, excitement and engagement in the college’s campus life,” said DuBois. “Returning to Thomas Nelson, as the college’s new president, completes the circle for this hard-working and deeply respected community college leader. I’m excited for both John and the college.”


State Board for Community Colleges Certifies four Candidates for TNCC Presidency

Four finalists for the position of president at Thomas Nelson Community College have been certified by the State Board for Community Colleges.

Finalists include Dr. John Dever, of Newport News; Dr. Carol W. Eaton, of Frederick, Maryland; Dr. Algie C. Gatewood, of Portland, Oregon; and Dr. Rose Harrell Johnson, of Clyde, North Carolina. The finalists will be invited to interviews with the Thomas Nelson Community College Board. Virginia Community College Chancellor Glenn DuBois hopes to make an appointment in June.
