Martin Luther King Jr.’s 80th birthday was celebrated Wednesday at Thomas Nelson Community College, but the occasion was also a celebration of women – past and present – and a discussion of what lies ahead in the Obama era.

The session, “Fulfilling the Dream: From King to Obama,” was held in the college’s Mary T. Christian auditorium, named for one of the Peninsula’s pioneering educators, activists and legislators.

TNCC Celebrates Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with Special Event

Thomas Nelson Community College will celebrate the life of Reverend, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through words and music on Wednesday, January 17 at 11:00 a.m. at the Mary T. Christian Auditorium on the Hampton campus. The program includes readings by student contest winners Ashley Null and Mandy Early, singing by the College’s Gospel choir students, as well as the talented duet Tayja. The keynote speaker for the event is Madam Annie Daniels, founder and owner of the Madam Daniels’ School of Beauty Culture.

Madam Daniels opened her school in 1959 in Newport News boasting four students and a basic course of study. Since that time, the school has continued to grow in enrollment and scope of curriculum. Madam Daniels holds a master’s degree in cosmetology from the National Beauty Culture League, Inc. She has won many honors in her field as well as for her work in civil rights and service to the community. She was the recipient of the Hampton University Founder’s Day Award in 2005 and a Woman of Courage Award from the Peninsula Chapter of 100 Black Men of America in 2001.
