G.I. Jobs Magazine Rates TNCC Among Nation’s Military-Friendly Schools

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) has been listed among G.I. Jobs magazine’s Military-Friendly Schools for 2013. The list recognizes the top 15 percent of colleges, universities, community colleges and trade schools nationwide that deliver the best experience for military students. G.I. Jobs provides service members and veterans with information about education, transition assistance and job opportunities.

“With this recognition, TNCC honors our rich tradition in serving the military,” said TNCC President John Dever. “It is a tradition that began with our namesake, Thomas Nelson, Jr., who was a merchant, a signer of the declaration, a colonial governor, and a militiaman who also provided his time and his wealth to finance George Washington’s army in the Revolutionary War, providing food, blankets, and clothing for the military.”

TNCC Hosts Information Session About New Veterans Center Planned for Hampton Campus

HAMPTON, Va. — Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Veterans Affairs Office invites veterans throughout the region and the community to an information session on Tuesday, January 25 to introduce a Veterans Center scheduled to soon begin at TNCC’s Hampton campus. The session takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium in Templin Hall on the Hampton campus and features presenter Jamar Blyther, a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Readjustment Counseling Technician.

Blyther will discuss services that veterans centers provide and give audience members an opportunity to ask questions. TNCC’s Veterans Affairs Coordinator Tim Freeman will also be available to answer questions about the College’s educational offerings for active duty and retired service members.

TNCC’s Veterans Affairs Coordinator Elected VP of National Organization Dedicated to Higher Education for Veterans

HAMPTON, Va. — Thomas Nelson Community College’s Veterans Affairs Coordinator Tim Freeman was elected Vice President of the National Association of Veterans Program Administrators (NAVPA). The Executive Board appointment adds to Freeman’s record of leadership within the organization. The 2009 NAVPA President’s Award recipient has held several NAVPA posts in recent years including Legislative Committee member, Department of Defense Liaison Co-chair, Education Committee Chair and 2008-2009 Region II Representative.

As Vice President, the U.S. Army veteran will oversee all NAVPA committees and support the organization’s president, as needed. This will included representing NAVPA in its president’s absence. Freeman travels to North Carolina in March to represent NAVPA at the North Carolina/South Carolina Veterans Affairs Association meeting. Additionally, Freeman will be among his NAVPA peers in Washington, D.C. meeting throughout the year with federal lawmakers to discuss issues that affect veterans.

TNCC Named Among Military Friendly Schools By G.I. Jobs

HAMPTON, Va. – Thomas Nelson Community College has been listed among G.I. Jobs magazine’s Military Friendly Schools for 2011. The list recognizes the top 15 percent of colleges, universities, community colleges and trade schools nationwide that are doing the most to embrace America’s service members (active-duty and veterans) as students. More than 15,500 were enrolled at TNCC last year and of that figure, 1,300 were active-duty or veteran students.

G.I. Jobs provides service members and veterans with information about education, transition assistance and job opportunities. TNCC and others on the publication’s Military Friendly Schools list — which is available at www.militaryfriendlyschools.com/2011list — was also acknowledged for offering additional benefits to student veterans such as on-campus veterans programs, credit for service, military spouse programs and more.

U.S. Navy Students to Graduate from Medical Laboratory Technology Program at Thomas Nelson Community College

Six of the Graduating Students Served as Hospital Corpsmen in Iraq and Afghanistan:
The Virginia Peninsula – On Wednesday, August 9, at 8:30 a.m., 32 U.S. Navy students will be graduating from the Medical Laboratory Technology Program at Thomas Nelson Community College. The ceremony will take place at the Mary T. Christian Auditorium on the Thomas Nelson Hampton campus.

Six of the graduating students served in Iraq and Afghanistan supporting the U.S. Marine Corps as hospital corpsmen prior to convening for school at Thomas Nelson Community College. Hospital corpsmen play a key role in rendering emergency medical treatment to U.S. Marines in a combat environment. Upon graduation, these U.S. Navy students will be sent around the world to serve as Med Lab Technicians in U.S. Navy facilities where medical laboratories are available.
