TNCC Presents Lerner & Loewe’s ‘Brigadoon’ in November

Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Performing Arts Department and TNCC Players will present Lerner & Loewe’s “Brigadoon”  on the Hampton campus at the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium in Templin Hall.

Performances will take place Nov. 9-11 and Nov. 16-18 at 8:00 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3:00 p.m. Sundays.

Popularized by the Broadway musical and 1954 film, “Brigadoon” chronicles the tale of two Americans who become lost on a hunting trip in Scotland. The New Yorkers encounter a small uncharted village called Brigadoon and its people who harbor a mysterious secret.

The natives behave as if they were still living two hundred years in the past. Songs from the production such as “Almost Like Being in Love” have become standards.

The College presents three productions annually. The upcoming musical boasts a cast that includes students, faculty, staff and members of the community.

TNCC Celebrates Presidential Inauguration Oct. 12

Thomas Nelson Community College  (TNCC) will celebrate the inauguration of its President, John T. Dever, on Friday, October 12 at 10:00 a.m. on the Hampton campus in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium in Templin Hall. Offices on TNCC’s Hampton and Historic Triangle campuses are closed to the public  from 8:00 a.m.  to 1:30 p.m.

Classes are cancelled. Bookstores on both campuses will observe normal operating hours. Additionally, Workforce Development employer training programs and services at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center will run as scheduled.

The Inauguration Ceremony will feature Sen. Thomas K. Norment Jr. and Virginia Community College System Chancellor Glenn Dubois as guest speakers.

With a career in education spanning more than 40 years, Dr. Dever became President of TNCC in October 2011. Before joining TNCC, he was Executive Vice President for Academic and Student Services at Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale, Virginia.

Local Production Company Brings Tragic Comedy to TNCC

Poquoson Island Players will open its 2012-2013 season with Beth Henley’s “Crimes of the Heart” September 21–30 at Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium, Hampton campus. The show is open to the public with Friday and Saturday performances at 8 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. shows on Sundays. Tickets are $18 general admission and $15 for students and senior citizens.

In this tragic comedy, three Mississippi sisters face as heap of misfortune throughout their lives. The latest family tragedy finds the youngest sister, Babe, grappling with criminal charges after shooting her abusive husband. As the older sisters try to help Babe, they come face-to-face with some of their own dysfunction. Humor ensues as the sisters face their hardship together.

TNCC Presents Rodgers and Hammerstein’s ‘The Sound of Music’

Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Department of Performing Arts and TNCC Players will present Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music” at the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium (MTCA), Templin Hall, on the Hampton campus. Performances will take place June 15-17 and June 22-24 at 8:00 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3:00 p.m. Sundays.

TNCC’s Department of Performing Arts and TNCC Players present three productions annually. The upcoming musical is the College’s largest production to date with more than 50 cast members, including students, faculty, staff and members of the community. “Our cast [is] really talented and we’re just so proud of them. They do amazing work, and I think the audience is going to be in for a real treat,” said Michael Sundblad, Chair of TNCC’s Department of Music and Performing Arts.

Made famous by the Broadway musical and 1965 film, “The Sound of Music” chronicles the journey of Maria, a rebellious nun, and the Von Trapp family, a widowed captain and his seven children. After attempting to change the rules at the convent, Maria is urged to leave the convent to work as a governess for the Von Trapps.

Chesapeake Bay Wind Ensemble Performs at TNCC May 12

The Chesapeake Bay Wind Ensemble will present “…And All that Jazz” at Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) on Saturday, May 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium, Hampton campus.

The Chesapeake Wind Ensemble was founded in 1998 to provide an avenue for local amateur musicians to hone their skills. With about 40 members, the ensemble plays a wide variety of pieces at a myriad of venues in the Hampton Roads area, presenting approximately eight performances annually. The nonprofit organization offers special opportunities for its high school musicians with scholarships for some of the graduating students.

TNCC Brings Horror to the Stage with ‘Dracula’

Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Department of Performing Arts and TNCC Players will present William McNulty’s adaptation of “Dracula” at the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium (MTCA), Templin Hall, on the Hampton campus. The show opens Friday, April 13 with performances at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. on Sundays through Sunday, April 22.

Based on Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, this horror brims over with action, superhuman strength and mystical powers as a professor leads efforts to hunt down the evil Count Dracula. The brave hunters face frustration as Dracula employs his powers to outsmart them and hamper their search. The climax of the familiar tale finds the hunters and vampires face-to-face in a chilling confrontation.
