Iron Street Productions Brings Drama to TNCC

Iron Street Productions will present the play “Extremities” March 23-25 at Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium on the Hampton campus. The production is open to the public with Friday and Saturday performances at 8 p.m. and 3 p.m. shows on Sundays.

“Extremities” follows a woman as she contemplates revenge after capturing an attacker who stole her purse and later returned to her home to rape her. After overtaking her attacker, she locks him away and weighs her options. Should she kill him? Should she let him go? Perhaps that would be too risky. Maybe should could call the police, but what if they think she is a liar? Jeff Corriveau will direct the production starring Brittany S. Harris, Alloy Langenfeld, Melissa Sullivan and Rosalind Robertson.

Benefit Concert for the TNCC Performing Arts Program

Thomas Nelson Community College hosts a benefit concert, wine and dessert event on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium in Templin Hall on the Hampton Campus. Featuring The Windsor Trio, the event will benefit TNCC’s Performing Arts Program. Broadcast journalist Don Roberts of WAVY TV 10 is the master of ceremonies.

During the occasion, TNCC will officially dedicate its new Steinway grand piano, a contribution from the Sloane Family Foundation and the Hampton Roads Community Foundation.

TNCC Observes Black History Month with a Series of Free Events

Thomas Nelson Community College will observe Black History Month with a series of free presentations and other activities. Themed “African American Women Innovators: Thinkers, Creators, Dreamers,” the celebration begins Tuesday, Feb. 7. The schedule is indicated below.

As a child, Carolyn McKinstry survived the bombing of Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala. After losing four friends in the attack, McKinstry attended mass meetings and rallies at the church as a teen and was among thousands of students hosed by firemen during marches in 1963. The Birmingham native survived a second bombing that destroyed a large portion of her home in 1964. McKinstry has shared her experiences with the History and Discovery Channels, CNN, Life Magazine, The Oprah Winfrey Show, national and local Public Radio and numerous other organizations and academic institutions.

Local Production Company Brings Comedic Play to TNCC

Poquoson Island Players will present Sam Bobrick’s “Baggage” Jan. 27 – Feb. 5 at Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium, Hampton campus. The show is open to the public with Friday and Saturday performances at 8 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. shows on Sundays. Tickets are $15, general admission and $13 for students and senior citizens.

Set in the living room of a New York apartment, “Baggage” centers on Phyllis and Bradley, two difficult, single people, trying to heal from their respective disappointing relationships. Despite a very disagreeable first encounter when their luggage was mixed up at the airport, the two decide to help each other overcome their heartaches by forcing a friendship. They eventually discover that although they may be too difficult for everyone else in the world, they are right for each other.

TNCC Names Broadcast Journalist Barbara Ciara as its Sixth Presidential Leadership Award Recipient

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) has selected award-winning broadcast journalist Barbara Ciara to receive its Sixth Annual Presidential Leadership Award. As part of TNCC’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day observance, the award presentation takes place Thursday, Jan. 19 at 9 a.m. on the Hampton campus in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium, Templin Hall. At TNCC’s Historic Triangle campus in Williamsburg, a reception takes place at 11 a.m. on the second floor landing.

The College established its Presidential Leadership Award to honor Dr. King’s the life and work by recognizing an outstanding community leader and important role model for students.

Also as part of TNCC’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day observances, faculty and staff volunteers  will participate in community service at a Hampton Soup Kitchen,  Warwick Forest Assisted Outreach Center in Newport News and the Grove Christian Outreach Center in Williamsburg.  Contact specialevents@tncc.edu for details about these Jan. 13 and Jan. 20 community service efforts.

PTK International Honor Society Chapter at TNCC Hosts Fall 2011 Induction

Thomas Nelson Community College’s (TNCC) Phi Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society will host its fall 2011 induction ceremony on Friday, October 28 at 7 p.m. on the Hampton campus. Free and open to the public, the ceremony take places in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium, Templin Hall.

Dr. Crystal B. Taylor, Instructional Supervisor for Career and Technical Education with Newport News Public Schools, will be the keynote speaker. Formerly Director of Outreach and Recruitment for TNCC, she has Bachelor’s degree in accounting from Hofstra University, a Master’s degree in Education from Regent University and a Ph.D. in Vocational and Technical Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Her career in education spans more than 10 years and includes service as a Cooperative Office Education Coordinator and Future Business Leaders of America Advisor. She has also taught in subject areas such as Business Information Technology.
